Stéphane Denève, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and the New World Symphony brought the 2025–26 season to a brilliant close with a tribute to co-founders Michael Tilson Thomas and Lin Arison.

This Season Finale celebrated French-American fireworks through the music of Gershwin and Bernstein, with one of the world’s great pianists joining NWS for an unforgettable evening. Highlights included I Got Rhythm and An American in Paris, elevated by the immersive technology and striking architecture of the Frank Gehry-designed New World Center.

Este Season Finale celebró fuegos artificiales franco-estadounidenses a través de la música de Gershwin y Bernstein, con uno de los grandes pianistas del mundo acompañando a NWS en una velada inolvidable. Rachmaninoff – Symphonic Dances, Movement 2, led by Anja Bihlmaier and performed by the New World Symphony Fellows in 2025. The second movement takes the form of a waltz, with a solo violin carrying an extended melody over shifting orchestral textures. Its dance rhythms and changing colors suggest the “Twilight” title Rachmaninoff once considered for the movement.

The classical music world is mourning the death of Michael Tilson Thomas, the renowned American conductor and composer who co-founded Miami Beach’s New World Symphony (NWS).⁠

The organization has confirmed that Tilson Thomas, affectionately known as MTT, passed away on April 22, 2026 at his home in San Francisco at the age of 81. For the last few years, he had been battling an aggressive form of brain cancer.⁠

In 1987, he co-founded NWS, which has helped launch the careers of over 1,300 musicians worldwide and leaves a lasting legacy in South Florida's cultural scene.⁠

“I had had a dream for a very long time of there being a place where young musicians could do some of their most creative work," he said. ⁠

For decades, Tilson Thomas divided his time between San Francisco — where he served as Music Director of the city's Symphony for 25 years — and Miami Beach where he was NWS’s artistic director for 34.⁠
