Close-range rapid fire 🎯 Soldiers from the 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment, recently sharpened their shooting skills alongside troops from the 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, and marines from the Philippine Marine Corps and United States Marine Corps during Exercise Balikatan.

This year’s exercise involved more than 17,000 personnel from New Zealand, the Philippines, Australia, the United States, Canada, France, and Japan.

Participation in Exercise Balikatan provided the New Zealand Army the opportunity to strengthen interoperability, build relationships, deepen defence cooperation, and improve combat readiness.

Konnichiwa 🇳🇿🇯🇵 Our close relationship with Japan was on full display this morning as the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) Mogami-class multi-mission stealth frigate JS Kumano sailed into Wellington Harbour, accompanied by Royal New Zealand Navy frigate, HMNZS Te Mana.

Both ship companies lined the rails as part of the ceremonial port entry as we welcomed the Japanese ship and its crew of 110.

The visit is as an example of the importance of maintaining strong maritime partnerships in an increasingly contested environment.

“The deteriorating security situation we can all observe makes these visits by partner navies such as the JMSDF, proof of our ongoing friendship and continued focus on interoperability.” ~ Maritime Component Commander, Commodore Shane Arndell

2000 flying hours 🚁 Royal New Zealand Air Force Helicopter loadmaster Flight Sergeant Britney Perkins was on a tactical flight in Papua New Guinea, ferrying troops in an NH90 helicopter around the country, when she reached her 2000 hours flying milestone - equivalent to more than a full year of working eight-hour days.

“Reaching that number of flying hours – that’s pretty special to me. I’ve got a three-year-old son, Tom, so being able to achieve this while raising this little young man has been pretty rewarding.” ~ Flight Sergeant Britney Perkins

Soldiers from the New Zealand Army have recently completed training alongside the Republic of Korea Marine Corps (ROK MC) during a large-scale joint exercise near Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province.

It’s the first time NZ Army soldiers had been attached to a ROK MC landing battalion in support of maritime operations, and continues New Zealand’s longstanding commitment to efforts to maintain peace on the Korean Peninsula.

About 20 naval vessels supported the task group, including the landing platform helicopter ship ROKS Marado (LPH-6112). Other assets involved included MUH-1 Marineon marine utility helicopter, P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, KF-16 fighter jets, AH-64E attack helicopters and unmanned aerial systems.

“During the training, Kiwi soldiers worked alongside Republic of Korea Marine Corps personnel on urban operations, live-fire drills, landing rehearsals and KAAV embarkation and disembarkation procedures.” ~ Platoon Officer Commanding, Captain Matt Peri

Learning jungle survival🎋🔥 Marines from the Philippine Marine Corps have been sharing their expertise in jungle survival with soldiers from 2nd/1st Battalion, Royal New Zealand Infantry Regiment alongside soldiers from 5th/7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment.

Jungle survival training included making a fire, setting up traps to capture food, and how to use common Indo-Pacific jungle plants such as banana leaves and bamboo shoots to cook.

Training in the Philippines enhances the New Zealand Army’s capability to operate in tropical environments and integrate with Australia and work with our close regional partners.

This year’s Exercise Balikatan involves over 17,000 personnel including personnel from the Philippines, Australia, United States, France, and Japan and is the first time Canada and New Zealand has participated in the annual exercise.

Graduation day 👏 Congratulations to our newest graduates from Recruit Regular Force 418.

After an intensive 13-week course, 82 recruits have successfully made the transition from civilians to soldiers.

Today’s graduation parade at Waiouru Military Camp was reviewed by Suze Redmayne, MP for Rangitikei, who acknowledged the recruits for their achievements throughout training.

During the ceremony, recruits were presented with their ID discs, selected achievement awards, performed the #NZArmy haka, and proudly marched off the parade ground as soldiers of Ngāti Tūmatauenga, the New Zealand Army.

After graduation and spending time at home with their families, soldiers will move into specialised training to develop their skills and knowledge for their chosen trade and career.

Congratulations, soldiers.
