Some news! I want to thank everyone for their support after my post about my stress related hair loss a week or so ago. After a few more showers where clumps of hair fell out I decided I had enough. I actually shaved my head once before, in 2016 before I drove from LA to ATL to work at TCM/FilmStruck (that was after having a platinum blonde mohawk for three years.) It feels good. I’m ready to hit forty next month with renewed energy. Thank you to Shannon at Floyd’s on Irving Park for doing a great job and @kate_scott_photography for taking this photo during my introduction of @unadosa’s spectacular new film TIME AND WATER at @chicagocritics Film Festival last night. We’ve got three more banger nights at @musicboxchicago. I especially want to urge people to come out for the documentary BLACK ZOMBIE tonight (Tuesday) co-presented by the great @blackwomendirectors. Also, Must-Watch Indies is back at @facetschicago for the next few weekends. I’ll be introducing Saturday’s screenings of ALL THAT’S LEFT OF YOU and DEAD LOVER, but you can also catch up with PILLION. And on May 16th we’ll be presenting DEAD LOVER in Stink-O-Vision! I’m off to Cannes on Sunday, where I hope to make lots of connections and see lots of great films and practice my rusty French. Onward! Allons-y!

MY BOOK IS ON SALE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I wrote about my long journey towards writing this book on my newsletter, so give that a read at link in profile. There are also links to order the book and for the film screening and book tour.
Once again, I must thank my agent @nickirichesin for believing in this project. @rizzolibooks for giving it a home. @panandscan for her glorious illustrations. @cmykayleigh for making it look so damn cool. @rosannaarquette for being an early reader and champion of the book. And @812filmreviews for supporting me in every way possible while I worked on it over the last four years.
And the biggest thank you of all to the filmmakers who spoke to me about their work and careers with such insight and grace:
@msallisonanders, Gillian Armstrong, Lizzie Borden, Jane Campion, @marthacoolidge, @dash_julie, @josephinejambox, @cheryldunye, @bettegordonfilms, Marielle Heller, @mirandajuly, Karyn Kusama, @mmlamber, @pagliji, @sallypotter, @gpbmadeit, @isabelvsandoval, @desperately_seeking, and @kattshea.

“Everything in nature is powerfully alive, even if it’s an abiotic landscape. There’s life force and sentience all around us, and that we are deeply connected to it.”
I spoke with the great @unadosa about her poetically personal and political new documentary TIME AND WATER.

“Through the power of archives like these MiniDV tapes, there is a path towards resistance, a path towards a shared memory of both the good and the bad.”
Over at RogerEbert, I reviewed Kamal Aljafari’s stunning film WITH HASAN IN GAZA

My Dad passed away a year ago today.
The last 18 months have been some of the most trying times of my entire life. I wrote about my reflections during these horrible times (and also a little bit about why Springsteen is my constant).

Picked up some interesting books in France, plus found a copy of Mathieu Amalric’s TOURNÉE, for which he took home best director at Cannes in 2010, but as far as I know has never had a U.S. release (I had to watch it through dubious means back in the day). Excited to rewatch it.

First Cannes Film Festival on the books! I actually had a much better time than I thought I would. I saw 33 films (60% of which were directed by women because I stuck mostly to the sidebars). I only saw a few movies that I didn’t like, but I saw several that I love love loved. I interviewed one of my fave directors (which will drop in July), reviewed two films for IndieWire and will have some capsules for Letterboxd soon; I also wrote about all 33 films for my newsletter (and will write a recap at the end of the month as well). I ate lots of good food (Gouda with cumin seed is an elite snack) and made some great new friends and got to meet up with so many old friends. I was only able to make the trip work this year because of flight credits from my cancelled book tour last year, but I hope I can figure out how to make it work again. It’s warmed my cold cold heart. À bientôt!

While at #Cannes, I visited the Palestine Pavilion (@palfilminstitute) where I attended a Nakba Day vigil, a panel on programming Palestinian cinema, and a celebration of life for the late great Mohammad Bakri. I also attended a party hosted by @watermelonpictures about the future of their distribution company and streaming service. Read at 🔗⬆️ or stories.

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
