Opportutoring is dedicated to uplifting our migrant community, and spotlighting groups and individuals rooted in migrant experiences. In light of ongoing protests in Iran these recent weeks, we are sharing a local artist from Iran who has dedicated much of her work to capturing suffering and the fight for freedom of Iran. Check out more of her work here: @anahitarezvanirad https://anahitarezvani-rad.com/

🌟Meet our tutors: London Chapter🌟
“I’m Elisa, 19 years old French Argentinian studying Arts and Sciences at UCL. If my degree can tell you one thing, it’s that one discipline isn’t enough for me. I guess you could say the same of my interests? 😂

Something for sure though is that Opportutoring has taught me so much. And I don’t mean that in the ‘LinkedIn post’ kind of way. I mean it in the ‘how I think about things’ kind of way. An obvious topic you get an insight in is the refugee crisis. But beyond that, did you know that Syria was the region where agriculture was first developed? Or that Arabic has over 300 words for lion? Talk about a rich language.

What I mean by these few anecdotes is that Opportutoring offers more than English lessons (although it is certainly about that too!). My tutee and now friend Kamal once said: “Opportutoring helped me (...) understand how others are different from me, my culture, my traditions, my religion, yet are thinking about the same issues (as I am) but in a different way.” I think he said it all :)”

Elisa’s recommendation: Covid allowing, check out the Refugees exhibition at the Imperial War Museum🌞

🌟Meet our tutors: London Chaper🌟
“Hi, I’m Achuthan Baburaj (call me Achu), I’m from London, am 23 years old and I’m studying MA International Studies and Diplomacy at SOAS. Fun fact: I’m also a Spotify artist!

I joined Opportutoring because I wanted to gain experience in teaching and to help others. From the experience, I’ve learnt that it’s really important to track (the student’s) progress in order for us both to really see how far they’ve improved and what they’ve learnt. The thing I’ve found most rewarding is just helping people learn English from a first language point of view and making sure that they can speak confidently around native/proficient speakers.”

Achu’s book recommendation: ‘Refugee boy’ by Benjamin Zephaniah 🌞

🌟Meet our tutors: London Chapter🌟
“Hi! My name is Saira and I’m 22 years old. I’m originally from Pakistan but have lived in England for the majority of my life. I’m a final year student at SOAS doing a Liberal Arts degree and majoring in Middle Eastern Politics.

In Pakistan the school curriculum is very different and at the age of 6, I was still unable to read English, so my mum would teach me every day after school in preparation for joining school back in the UK. Although I was so young, I remember truly feeling like I would never be able to read English, but practice and determination showed me anything is possible. When I heard about Opportutoring through a school friend, it took me back to that moment, and how difficult others must find learning to speak, read and write in a language that isn’t native to them.

During lockdown, Opportutoring felt like the perfect way to help others yet still stay safe. Teaching has not only improved my communication skills, but also allowed me to build an honest friendship with my student. Hearing her open up about her life story was very humbling, and it’s honestly amazing how motivated she is to improve her situation through learning English, and I’m happy I can be a part of her journey. I’m very grateful to Opportutoring for creating a platform where you can use your time to help others in a meaningful and constructive way.”

Saira’s recommendations: ‘For Sama’ by Waas Al-Kateab, Last Men in Aleppo directed by Feras Fayyad, The White Helmets directed by Orlando von Einsiendel (avail on Netfix)🌞

In 2019, Canada 🇨🇦 came out as the world leader in the resettlement of refugees, providing 30,082 refugees with the opportunity to build a new life. Despite this, refugees experience difficulty integrating into our society.

🔷 How can the social inclusion of refugees be implied in our daily lives?
Inclusion can take many forms: forging ties and friendships, being able to apply for local jobs or go to local schools, the having access to different services such as housing and healthcare.

🔷 It is imperative to understand the attitudes we have towards immigrants for several reasons. More positive feelings toward immigration on a societal level result in more positive behavior toward immigration in everyday encounters and vice-versa. Attitudes toward immigration and immigrants also contribute to the construction of their sense of belonging and identity, as an accepted and valued member of society.

🔷 We encourage you today to think about how you can make an impact in increasing social inclusion of refugees in our community. Here are some of few tips:

1) Support local businesses ran by refugees
2) Volunteer your skills to refugee aid groups
3) Educate yourself - and others

“My name is Luegi, I’m 23 years old and from North London. I’m currently studying MA Global Creative and Cultural Industries at SOAS. I have a love for music so during lockdown I started a vinyl collection.

I joined Opportutoring because I enjoy teaching. I love the feeling of helping others learn and grow in confidence. Opportutoring removes the communication barriers often placed on refugees and creates an opportunity to build relationships, make new friends and join a community.

The most rewarding part of tutoring for me have been building a friendship and connection with my student and discovering all the amazing work she does. I really recommend it to anyone who wants to go into teaching, is curious about the world and the refugee crisis and wants to form new connections and feel part of a community!”

Luegi’s film recommendations: Adú (on Netflix), and Teranga (available on the Guardian website)🌞

View Instagram Stories in Secret

The Instagram Story Viewer is an easy tool that lets you secretly watch and save Instagram stories, videos, photos, or IGTV. With this service, you can download content and enjoy it offline whenever you like. If you find something interesting on Instagram that you’d like to check out later or want to view stories while staying anonymous, our Viewer is perfect for you. Anonstories offers an excellent solution for keeping your identity hidden. Instagram first launched the Stories feature in August 2023, which was quickly adopted by other platforms due to its engaging, time-sensitive format. Stories let users share quick updates, whether photos, videos, or selfies, enhanced with text, emojis, or filters, and are visible for only 24 hours. This limited time frame creates high engagement compared to regular posts. In today’s world, Stories are one of the most popular ways to connect and communicate on social media. However, when you view a Story, the creator can see your name in their viewer list, which may be a privacy concern. What if you wish to browse Stories without being noticed? Here’s where Anonstories becomes useful. It allows you to watch public Instagram content without revealing your identity. Simply enter the username of the profile you’re curious about, and the tool will display their latest Stories. Features of Anonstories Viewer: - Anonymous Browsing: Watch Stories without showing up on the viewer list. - No Account Needed: View public content without signing up for an Instagram account. - Content Download: Save any Stories content directly to your device for offline use. - View Highlights: Access Instagram Highlights, even beyond the 24-hour window. - Repost Monitoring: Track the reposts or engagement levels on Stories for personal profiles. Limitations: - This tool works only with public accounts; private accounts remain inaccessible. Benefits: - Privacy-Friendly: Watch any Instagram content without being noticed. - Simple and Easy: No app installation or registration required. - Exclusive Tools: Download and manage content in ways Instagram doesn’t offer.
