Rick Haydon. My Teacher. My Mentor. My Friend.

It’s taken me a week to be able to find some semblance of words for Rick. I’ve read so many beautiful things said by those that were touched by Rick’s larger than life presence, simultaneously reassuring and heartbreaking. I can’t distill into a social media post what 21 years of knowing and loving Rick meant, but he’s not getting off easy here without another tribute from a former, and always, knucklehead student.

Part of what has allowed me to process a little bit this week was getting back to teaching. The semester started again, I’ve met new students and welcomed old ones back into the fold, and in every minute of these lessons Rick is present. I didn’t know this would be my path, but it’s only been possible through the encouragement and belief Rick had in me as a washed up baseball player coming to college for Jazz guitar. Even just this week I’ve already said so many things to my students that Rick said to me (well most of the things he said…2004 was a different time.) But what I felt from Rick in each lesson that I try to instill in every student, is a belief in themselves. He cared. Truly cared. It may have come out harsh and tough at times, but dammit it was sincere and genuine. It left such an indelible mark on me and hundreds, if not thousands of others over his long and illustrious career as a performer and educator. Thinkin of warmer times

This Christmas Eve Santa brought me an accidental 1xRPE10 rep. This is 430lbs, and it was supposed to be an RPE 8, or two reps left in reserve. Such is the way of still learning auto-regulation with lifting. I still don’t have the best grasp on it a year plus into training this way, but I do like the flexibility it gives on a day to day basis. Deadlifts today went like this, 1x430 then 4 sets of 2x355. The second video is my last set of 355. As always, happy to chat about this stuff anytime!
