It was a real honor to have Joon Lee and the Blue Whale in my space for this series, Locals Only.
Joon is a dear friend and the Blue Whale has been an oasis, a refuge, a creative home to me and to countless others.

For this, I basically just sat down and improvised two solos back-to-back. We unanimously liked this second solo a little more, and that was that. Like a musical snapshot of me at home.
here it's split into shorter videos, as the whole solo was like 8+ minutes.

Solo Saturday number 14

Excerpt from riq solo.
From a highlight video filmed by Noureddine El Warari from a concert circa 2004 of Vashti, a world percussion ensemble led by percussionist Adam Rudolph. I was blessed to be a part of this group for a handful of years or so, and few different line-ups. This iteration was Adam Rudolph, Poovalur Sriji. I Nyoman Wenten, Munyungo Jackson, Houman Pourmehdi, Brahim Fribgane, and myself. Other lineups I was a part of also included Derf Reklaw, Pak Djoko Wulojo, and Brad Dutz. Multiple concerts also featured the amazing Robert Wisdom with mind blowing theatrical monologue-improvisations, that would precede and introduce Vashti each night.
A VERY special group to be a part of, lots of amazing memories, and a most special time for me for these kinds of world music collaborations.

(Admittedly still in a complete fog since my mom passed last Saturday. But this week I chose to dive head-first back into teaching. It’s music, teaching and playing, that’s the best distraction and therapy for me right now. I know it and can feel it.)

Solo Saturday number eleven.

This is a clip of my solo/ featured section from my composition, Peeling the Onion.
It’s a tabla solo in eleven that leads to a pandeiro solo in the same cycle, culminating with a samba in 5 ½ (or double-time of the 11 cycle).

This clip was from Hands On’Semble’s 20th Anniversary Celebration at The Blue Whale, Los Angeles CA. October 14th and 15th, 2017.
Hands On’Semble was a very special group for me, I couldn’t be prouder. What we got to do and experience through music was truly amazing, especially from just sitting around banging on some drums!!!

Solo Saturday number ten.

Two short solos in five, pandeiro and kanjira.
Originally from a Remo product video back in 2010. Brad Dutz and I were each demo-ing some world percussion individually, and thanks to Brad’s suggestion we also played through one of his pieces as duet. Live and single take, as these things usually are.

In those days I was integrally involved in the development of these and other instruments at Remo (spending countless hours in R&D, meetings and discussions, playing and tweaking prototypes, etc…even Remo Belli at one point offered these to me as “signature drums”, but when I work with any company on their products I feel it should be THEIR name on the drum, not mine, and giving this kind of insight and help is in part what I can offer to make these endorsement relationships mutually beneficial. Now all the folks that I worked with on these instruments at Remo: like Remo Belli, Chalo Eduardo, and Sargis aren’t around to recall the integral nature of my role with those drums. Almost all of those product videos have vanished from the internet over the years, but this one somehow through a third party has (for now) remained. Solo Saturday number nine.
This one just seemed a natural choice for the ninth installment, “The Ninth Anything”.
Not a “solo” in the way the other Solo Saturday posts have been, as SOLOS, but this is the opening track from my last solo album, “The Ayes Have It”, Vol. II. Those albums are a mix of solo-solos, improvisations, and pieces played by me, as it’s all just me, composing, playing, recording, producing...
This is one of those “pieces”, primarily aFrame and tabla, with a frame drum base…then a metal pot, mason jar, water, mark trees, vibraslap, and a gong for accent and colors along the way.

Yesterday was a visiting artist at College of the Canyons, before my regular classes at CalArts. I was teaching about Tala, and we worked on Piru Bole by John Bergamo. Always thinking of my mentor, impossible to not. He’s so much a part of who I am and what I do as a musician, and as a person. I am eternally grateful and feel blessed to be a link in a chain to share information and give as I received.
