The solitude of long hours in the recording studio can lead to quiet bursts of inspiration one moment, and the door step of madness the next.

I’ve grown accustomed to these ebbs and flows over the years and embrace even the tedious moments as a meditative practice.

But I sometimes forget just how taxing the recording process can be on the artist: being under the microscope in an unfamiliar environment while trying to execute the “perfect” take.

That’s why one of my main jobs as a producer is to keep the mood light and relaxed. And should a session become tense or bogged down, apply gentle course correction to keep things moving and maintain the creative spirit.

True artistic expression only happens when one feels comfortable to truly let go. It’s a tall order but I guess we’re all crazy enough to accept the challenge.

Sometimes you connect with an instrument and go to unexpected places. The other night I was wrapping up a 5-hour session of engineering and recording myself playing various instruments.

I was definitely running out of gas but pushed on for one more task.

I picked up this Epiphone archtop to track slide melodies or something but instead came up with this little figure. I’m not even sure if it works within the arrangement of the song I was working on so maybe it’s the start of something new.

Being tired and fatigued in the studio usually yields diminished returns, but there’s also the chance of the unexpected.

We’ll just have to see what happens.

This summer was an incredible period of change and growth for me on both personal and professional levels.

My wife and I welcomed our second son into our family the same week our first born turned two (!!).

I also am no longer operating @redpandarecording out of the 808 Driggs Ave space. It’s been an amazing 2.5 yrs there but for various factors it is time to make a change.

I will always be grateful to everyone who came thru - whether virtually or in-person - during this crazy and challenging time.

Together we built something special - a safe space to weather the storm and connect thru creativity and self-expression via music.

Red Panda has always been more about a concept for collaboration and creation rather than a specific space.

From it’s humble beginnings on Johnson Ave in Bushwick, to the “China Bunker” days, thru the “home studio and abroad” era - so many of you have trusted me to partner in your music-making process that it’s truly humbling.

I am excited to announce the next phase of this process: my new “home base” will be Studio B @bunkerstudio. I will also be doing larger tracking dates @virtueandvicestudios.

These are absolutely two of my favorite rooms to work out of, and both happen to be run by damn fine folks as well.

I am looking forward to this next chapter and excited for you to join me on the journey.

I was still a teenager when I would sneak into the Music Menu in Greektown Detroit to see @thelucasband play. His playing always blew me away and he was such a good guy too. Glad to find after all these years neither has changed.

So great to see him play last night with the queen Ms. @bettyelavette at the @bluenotenyc. An amazing band and their run goes through Sunday night.
