Hey gang, I’ve made an album and it’s out today. It’s called Come On, Be Kind.
The album is about losing my dad when I was younger. I wanted it to be a celebration of his life, and an homage to someone who lived his life with joy. It ended up being about a lot more - the connection I felt with others and life and myself as a result of the loss. It also ended up being about my family and loved ones, and it became a love letter to my home, as people and place are so wrapped up in each other. It mentions people by name, and pubs I’ve worked in, streets I’ve lived on, the hill my dads factory was on.
I can be a bit cynical about the idea of catharsis in sharing painful experiences, but I feel a huge sense of completion and connection in finishing and releasing this album. I think grief can be avoided in our culture but this album and the process of making it has only brought me joy. It’s given me a huge sense of connection with my dad, my home, myself and my loved ones, and I’ve found a lot of happiness through that connection to life.
It’s vulnerable and open, which is always something I’ve loved in music, but it’s scary when you have to do it yourself. It’s always got an eye on the hope and joy to be found, but everyone I’ve played it to has been brought to tears. Watch out.
It’s strange to share it as the album is so local - about my family and friends and home, and so those are the people I want to share it with - but it deserves to be out in the world properly.
I made it entirely at home on my own, which I will never do again.
I’m hugely proud of it, it’s exactly what I wanted to say about everything. I hope you love it like I do.
