🎉 GOOD NEWS: History keeps on ticking at Liverpool clocktower!
Plans approved to restore and revive the landmark clocktower building at 104–106 London Road in Liverpool, transforming it into a hotel 🛎️
🕰️This standout late-Victorian building has been on our radar years and in 2023, drawing on research by campaigner Jonathan Brown @sharethecitytours , we were successful in getting it grade-II listed.
Built in 1899 for the Liverpool Furnishing Company to designs by W. Hesketh & Co, the building is celebrated for its richly ornamented terracotta façade and commanding clock tower - a textbook example of confident late-C19 architecture. Later lives included a long stint as NatWest before closure in 2013.
We welcome the scheme’s clear commitment to repair and reuse, especially the careful conservation of original features. Find out more about our Building's at Risk register via the link in bio➡️

BREAKING NEWS // LIVERPOOL STREET STATION NEEDS YOUR HELP! 🚂
🏗️ Controversial plans to demolish a large part of Liverpool Street Station and build a 19-storey office through the concourse - ushering in a DECADE OF DISRUPTION for passengers - will be considered by the City of London's planning committee on 10th February.
Network Rail claims that building a tower over the station is the only way to pay for new escalators and lifts.
BUT THAT'S NOT TRUE!
SAVE has worked with KX architect @JohnMcAslanPartners to show how a more imaginative approach could achieve the upgrades without years of disruption. You can see both proposals on our website and make up your own mind.
✍️ Then have your say! The City is accepting comments on the destructive Network Rail proposal right up until the committee on 10th February - but the sooner you write the more likely your comment is to be read. If you are objecting, make that clear and say why.

We’re delighted Kristin Scott Thomas is supporting SAVE in our 50th birthday year 🎉
🔊She told us why she thinks our work is important:
🧱 “The buildings that surround us are like members of our family. A lot of them we love, a few we tolerate – but together they are the backdrop to our lives.
“Rather than tearing them down it makes cultural, economic, environmental – and emotional – sense to reuse them ♻️
“If you think about the places you are drawn to, the streets you enjoy strolling around – so often it’s the architecture that sets the stage. Lose that and you risk losing what makes a place special.
“SAVE does vital work, not only fighting to rescue buildings from demolition or dereliction but also coming up with creative ideas to give whole communities a future.” 🌇
Thanks for the kind words, Kristin. We’re big fans of your work too!
And for the record, Ma’am, we’d fight for Slough House if it was under threat – just as much as we would fight for Notting Hill or Gosford Park 😉

Thanks also for permission to reuse the stunning portrait of you by Vogue photographer @damianfoxe 🙏

Huge thanks to everyone who came on our full-day tour of #Grimsby. Once the largest fishing port in the world, the town still has an extraordinary industrial heritage from the 19th and 20th centuries.⚓🏭
Highlights of the day:
🎨🎶Visiting the Horizon Youth Zone in a former malt-making riverside factory once on SAVE’s Buildings at Risk register, now converted into a youth centre open seven days a week offering 20 different activities for 50p, from art and music to cooking and employment skills.
🐟A look round @alfredenderby, a thriving fish smoking business operating from traditional smokehouses on the dockside and selling haddock and salmon to customers across the UK.
🧊Seeing inside the remarkable grade II* Grimsby Ice Factory, where ambitious plans are underway to restore and convert the buildings into workspace and a conference venue.
We’re looking forward to seeing more buildings in the Conservation Area on the docks being restored and playing a central role in the town's future.

🔥 Two recent fires in listed buildings. Two stark reminders that this is a national issue.
Newell House in Sherborne, with origins in the 17th century, held layers of architectural and social history and embodied the evolving story of its town and community 🕰️
The Antrim Arms Hotel in Ballycastle, dating back to 1760, has served as a brewery, bank, and hotel over centuries of local life. In August 2025, plans to bulldoze the Grade B1-listed building were refused following objections from SAVE, Ulster Architectural Heritage and more than 80 local supporters 🏛️
The longer historic buildings sit unused, the more vulnerable they become to fire and further damage. These are places loved by their communities, yet many are left vacant for decades and allowed to fall into worsening disrepair.
SAVE is urging the respective local councils to bring in specialist experts to assess what remains of these buildings and examine their structural condition. Demolition must be avoided at all costs 🚨

🌀🎡May Building of the Month: Strutt’s North Mill, Belper in Derbyshire
To celebrate National Mills Weekend we are spotlighting the historic Belper Mills, added to SAVE’s Buildings at Risk register in 2023 🧵
Built in 1804 by industrial pioneer William Strutt after an earlier mill on the site was destroyed by fire, the grade I-listed North Mill is recognised as one of the world’s earliest iron-framed “fireproof” buildings 🔥
Thankfully, this year plans to redevelop the site were unanimously approved by the local authority and the future of the site is positively spinning🎉

🏠NEWS // Barlaston Hall has new owners! Congratulations to Mo & Ann Chaudry who've promised to preserve this important grade I-listed Palladian house in Staffs for future generations & to open the grounds to the public 👏
Previous owners include the legendary pottery firm Wedgwood ... and SAVE!
By 1981 Barlaston had been empty for 20yrs & was in a terrible state of decay & subsidence thanks to coal mining deep below (pic 1) 🏚️
Wedgwood wanted to demolish but SAVE believed it could be rescued. We fought the plans all the way to a public inquiry🤺
🎭 In a moment of high drama, Wedgwood's barrister, realising his clients were losing, offered an unexpected challenge: "If the 'united aesthetes' on the other side [aka SAVE & our allies] are so keen to save Barlaston, they can have it for £1." 😮
The catch? We must complete its restoration within 5yrs. If not, Wedgwood could buy it back for a pound.
We had 24 hours to decide 🤔 What would you do? With characteristic chutzpah, SAVE's founder Marcus Binney didn't hesitate. We bought Barlaston for £1!
The challenges we faced were complex & costly. SAVE took legal action against the Govt & National Coal Board for compensation for subsidence. That funded urgent repairs to make the house weather-proof, a critical first step.
With the house secure, we sold it to new private owners in 1992 who continued the restoration & brought it back to life as a stunning family home (pic 2).
We're delighted to hear the newest owners share our passion for this very special C18th house designed by Sir Robert Taylor.
📣Local businessman Mo Chaudry said: "The opportunity only knocks once. I am absolutely thrilled to be able to call Barlaston Hall our family home. To own such an incredible piece of Staffordshire history, which has deep ties to Wedgwood, is genuinely special."
🌟Barlaston is one of the biggest success stories in English heritage. As Marcus said: "It's a landmark case in the history of preservation & serves to illustrate how perseverance can win against overwhelming odds."
