A few weeks ago, I visited with Schaedyn and her parrot, Sebastian.

I’ve wanted to photograph these two the moment I started my spring darkroom class at PCC. My goal was to capture an emotional connection - animal to human, human to animal.

Sebastian is 26 years old. He often mimics voices and random recollections from Schaedyn’s childhood - appointing him the keeper of her memories.

It was not easy photographing a parrot. Unlike humans, animals have no idea their picture is being taken, it’s more organic. He often felt threatened by my presence so I had to leave the room in between shots. The answer to his ruffled feathers was simple, all he needed was to be by Schaedyn’s side.

Shooting 4x5 has strengthened my intentionality and patience for photography. I give a part of myself with every shoot I do.
