(2002), it blends speed, aggression, and bizarre vocal patterns that somehow turn into a hypnotic groove. The band plays with randomness, but there’s always precision behind it, creating something both weird and addictive. Matched with the unpredictable energy of Tom and Jerry, everything lines up in a way that feels chaotic… but perfect.

repost from @thequakesanfrancisco “California Über Alles” came out in 1979 and still sounds completely unhinged in the best way possible. Dead Kennedys took surf guitar, paranoia, political satire, and straight-up menace and turned it into one of punk’s defining songs.

Jello Biafra sings it like a deranged campaign speech from some hippie-fascist version of California where the “suede denim secret police” wipe out anybody uncool. At the time it was aimed at Governor Jerry Brown, but the joke was really about how power can dress itself up as peace, progress, or whatever trend people want to believe in.

That bassline alone feels like a warning siren. Dark, sarcastic, theatrical, nasty. Punk wasn’t supposed to be comfortable, and this song proved it immediately.

Still one of the greatest political punk singles ever made.

repost from @thequakesanfrancisco There’s something about the Patti Smith Group on The Old Grey Whistle Test in April ’78 that feels completely untouchable. Raw but elegant at the same time. Right in the middle of the Easter tour, they stopped at the BBC studios in Manchester and ripped through “Because the Night” and “25th Floor” like their lives depended on it.

Patti looked possessed, Lenny Kaye was cool as ever, Ivan Kral’s guitar lines cut through everything, and the whole band had that dangerous late-70s NYC energy that British TV barely knew what to do with.

What makes the performance even better is the timing — aired April 4, 1978, between their Rainbow Theatre shows in London, right as “Because the Night” was exploding into something massive. But honestly? “25th Floor” might be the real moment. Dark, hypnotic, chaotic poetry straight out of the underground.

Bob Harris introducing Patti Smith on OGWT feels like two completely different worlds colliding — punk poetry invading classic rock television for a few perfect minutes.

Still one of the greatest live TV performances ever captured from that era. 🎤⚡
