On this date in 1994, @weezer - 'Weezer [Blue Album]' was released.

📈 #6 for 1994, #271 overall

"Regardless of the fact that Weezer's debut seems tied inextricably to adolescence, it sports some of the best melodies ever written in pop music, brilliant production from Ric Ocasek (I cannot think of a better person to produce this record than the lead songwriter of The Cars - like Jesus, talk about serendipity), and a perfect mix between the sheen of 90s radio rock and at times uncomfortable lyrical and musical authenticity. And if a record has the ability to grab you and pull you to where you were when you first loved it, I would call that nothing short of magic. The Blue Album is one of my favourites, an album that doesn't grow with you but demands you travel back in time and meet it on its own terms." -RYM user Greenmountain

"What ultimately stands out, as it always has for Lone but amplified double here, is his chords. Hyperphantasia's swirling loops of major ninth chords, moved on astral planes across and in spite of modes, key areas, and conventional tonality, bursting at the seams with colors Pantone has yet to name...harmonic psychedelia." - RYM user kacho_on

On this date in 2021, @squidbanduk - 'Bright Green Field' was released.

📈 #32 for 2021, #4249 overall

"One of the best books I read last year was Christopher Priest’s 1977 novel A Dream of Wessex. The Britain of the book’s reality-sphere is a dystopian, cold, grey island subject to some sort of military occupation, a totally humdrum and dismal place. But the novel’s central characters, a team of academic researchers, have created a kind of collective dreaming apparatus, a VR machine visualising a potential future. The Britain of the simulated future is totally different — lush and languid, all windsurfing and unhurried lunches at seafood cafés. Once inside, the participants have no memory of their previous lives, and often form relationships with people inside the simulation who they wouldn’t have given a second glance to in real life. Towards the end of the novel, the ontological categories separating the worlds start to collapse; fume-belching power stations of the other world suddenly blight the creamy pastures, the dreamers start disappearing out of thin air.

Squid’s debut album reminds me of Priest’s novel in a number of ways. These eleven songs serve as a journey through a strange pastoral landscape, a Wessex of the unconscious, where everything grey and dismal about England today is refracted into a lush, bewildered Other England, latent paranoia and anxiety transmogrified into playful, chewy aphorisms. Patient and in control! Dig holes like a mole! Pamphlets through my door, and pamphlets on my floor! Ollie Judge’s delivery of these lines smack of David Byrne in all his energetic, almost camp, playfulness. The high tempos and krauty interlocking rhythms throughout this album are indebted to Talking Heads and their school of thought, something which sets Squid apart from their South London Scene(™) contemporaries, who tend to draw more from the more emotionally fraught pallettes of noise rock and post-rock. No, Squid are arch and cryptic, emotionally mysterious, dispersed into a pastoral dream." - RYM user themilkeyedmender

On this date in 2016, Death Grips (@bbpoltergiest) - 'Bottomless Pit' was released.

📈 #6 for 2016, #204 overall

"Just one skim-read through Stefan Burnett’s latest slew of meta-maniacal abstraction at the time conjured up enough grotesque, obscure and barbaric visions to rival the complete works of J. G. Ballard...However, the sound of the album that houses these themes and stories paints a very different picture to the one formed by the lyrics alone. It's a cackling portrait of the band not giving a care in the world what you expect from their art; a euphoric freak pop trip through anthemic explorations of the band-fanbase relationship, bordering on a kind of twisted self parody previously untouched upon in their impressive discography.

...Some have described the sound of the LP as a perfection of the art of abrasive ear candy...And while this may be the first Death Grips album in a while to not dish up something completely fresh, the results come insanely close to being as astonishing as anything we could have possibly hoped for." - RYM user COSMIC_CADET

On this date in 2023, Billy Woods (@backwoodzstudioz) & @kennysegal - 'Maps' was released.

📈 #3 for 2023, #673 overall

"Envisioned more or less like a travel log of thoughts and experiences from tours and trips and you know, this album seems like a big collection of vignettes at first...s he weaves together his usual snappy bars, he is putting himself way more out in the open, quite in the vein of Church, but as that album looked inwards, Maps looks more outside of that. It's an album about questioning yourself, asking yourself what your humanity even means to other people, how much expectations can poison your mind, how you reflect upon change in yourself while asking if this is where you wanted to go. How much your home feels like your home after you've been gone for so long, especially if the next trip is right ahead of you, the airport gates you spent hours sitting in watching other people going through the same transitional spaces as you. You all want to get there, but you are not there yet." - RYM user Hurricanslash

On this date in 2010, @deftones - 'Diamond Eyes' was released.

📈 #14 for 2010, #1446 overall

"What a fucking comeback, not that they ever fully fell off, but it's pretty evident within the first minute that they're reinvigorated and making the heaviest music of their career. Their signature formula is still in tact though, those heavy as shit parts seamlessly flowing into a melodic chorus that stays with you, if anything it's more effective now that the heavy parts are REALLY heavy. Most people, myself included, were probably not expecting Deftones to release one of the best albums of 2010 but here we are. "Dream metal" at its finest." - RYM user mookid
