Led by a pivotal Alberto Giacometti sculpture, ‘A New Vista: The David and Shoshanna Wingate Collection’ features over 50 works of Modern art and design and will headline The New York Sales this May.

Giacometti's ‘La Clairière (Composition avec neuf figures),’ conceived in 1950 and cast in 1960, is widely regarded as one of the most important multi-figural sculptures of the postwar period. It belongs to a trio of compositions that represents his first sustained success in rendering the elongated figures that would define his career. It’s joined by Giacometti’s bronze ‘Buste d'homme (dit New York I)’ and masterful paintings from Mark Rothko, Varvara Stepanova, and Wassily Kandinsky. Works by Diego Giacometti and a stunning Tiffany Studios ‘Wisteria’ table lamp round out this exceptional collection.

The collection will star in the Modern Evening Auction, presented in partnership with @celine, on 19 May. Find out more at the link in bio.

On Willem de Kooning’s birthday, we’re taking a closer look at the monumental ‘Untitled III.’ It’s a gem from the artist’s most coveted periods of production, the mid 1970s, and is a highlight of The Now and Contemporary Evening Auction at #SothebysNewYork.

By the time de Kooning painted ‘Untitled III’ in 1975, he had permanently moved from the city to his beloved country home in Springs, East Hampton. Now fully immersed in nature, he developed a new routine of biking, fishing, and swimming, and it’s in this environment that he produced some of his greatest paintings to date. With its gestural strokes of rich vermilions, steel blues, and saffron yellows, ‘Untitled III’ captures the spirit of renewal and unbridled vitality of this seminal period in de Kooning’s career.

‘Untitled III,’ which will be featured in The Now & Contemporary Evening Sale on 14 May, presented in partnership with @celine. Register to bid at the link in bio.

Is this peak Ruscha? Emblazoned across a snowy mountainside, the text 'ME' brings to mind the Hollywood sign, an image Ruscha continues to return to as a symbol for the glamour and allure of a west coast dream. Here, Ruscha transports us from the Hollywood Hills to Maroon Bells in Aspen, Colorado.

This rare painting from the artist’s celebrated Mountain series is on view at #SothebysNewYork. It’s one of only three known works from the series to feature this specific text, 'ME,' painted in the artist’s striking reverse airbrush technique. Ruscha began painting snowy mountains in the 1990s, borrowing the rugged, magnificent landscapes from magazine illustrations and photographs. He was drawn to the glory and beauty of the mountain tops, and the visual tension created by combining them with graphic text.

‘Me’ is a highlight of The Now & Contemporary Evening Auction on 14 May, presented by @celine. Register to bid at the link in bio.

John L. Marion, one of the most consequential and respected leaders in Sotheby’s history—and quite possibly the greatest auction showman—passed away yesterday.

The man whose motto was ‘’have gavel, will travel” began his career as an auctioneer at Sotheby’s in 1960, becoming president in 1972 and Chairman in 1975.

He sold everything from Van Gogh’s ‘Irises’ to Andy Warhol’s cookie jars and the diamond Richard Burton gave Elizabeth Taylor. The art market was in his blood, having been preceded by his father, Louis J. Marion, on the rostrum at Parke-Bernet.

A lifelong champion of the arts, John and his wife, Anne Marion, founded the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico—America’s first museum dedicated to a female artist.

After Mrs. Marion’s passing, Sotheby’s was entrusted with her collection of Abstract Expressionist and Pop Art masterpieces, which sold beautifully in 2021.

John leaves behind an enduring legacy in the art world—and especially here at Sotheby’s.

Jeff Koons meets Louis XIV. Watch as the artist explains the symbolism behind his gleaming, life-size bust of King Louis XIV, which stars in Robert Mnuchin: Collector at Heart.

Simultaneously a critique, homage, and self-portrait of ambition, Koons’ sculpture of the “Sun King” embodies the tension between grandeur and mass production. Made out of stainless steel, the smooth, broad planes of Louis’ face form a pristine mirror. When you stand in front of it, your own face gazes back, transforming this work into both icon and reflection.

See this Koons masterpiece at #SothebysNewYork before it heads to auction on 14 May. Book your entry to the exhibition at the link in bio.

Matisse’s ‘Madeleine II’ is a defining example of 20th-century sculpture and is on view on #SothebysNewYork. It marks an important transition into Modernism and represents Matisse’s aesthetic culmination.

After leaving his original position as a lawyer, Matisse spent much of the 1890s producing traditional paintings. In 1899, he encountered August Rodin’s work and turned to sculpture, workshopping his ideas with both paint and sculpture. Matisse based ‘Madeleine II’ not on a live model or painting, but of an earlier version of the sculpture, ‘Madeleine I.’ The result is an abstracted, dynamic figure that emphasizes form and surface instead of a naturalist depiction of the body.

‘Madeleine II’ is a standout work from The Neumann Family Collection, and will star in The Modern Evening Auction on 19 May, presented in partnership with @celine. Register to bid at the link in bio.

One of the finest landscapes in Vincent van Gogh’s career depicts an everyday scene: workers during the summer harvest.

Here, Specialist Edith Eustis tells the story of Van Gogh's rare large watercolor, ‘La Moisson en Provence,’ and why the artist was drawn to capturing this human scene. Painted in Arles in June of 1888, it captures the patchwork plains of La Crau in the full heat of the sun, dotted with farm buildings and laborers. Van Gogh clearly communicates his ambitions for grounding landscape art in lived experience and spiritual resonance.

See ‘La Moisson en Provence’ at #SothebysNewYork through 18 May, before it stars in The Modern Evening Auction presented in partnership with @celine. Reserve your entry time at the link in bio.
