So there we were, watching Top Chef, enjoying the relatively low-stakes cooking competition hijinks of it all, when much to our surprise we heard chef and wine brand haver Duyen Ha describe herself as “a barista champion”.

A barista champion! On Top Chef! How exciting. We’ve covered barista championships around the world for the better part of 20 years, and there’s nothing we love more than cheering on folks as they go on to do great things beyond the competition stage. But it was the darndest thing; we had no record of Chef Ha competing anywhere in our extensive coverage archives. So we did a bunch of research, and asked folks who were active around the New York City coffee scene in the early 2010s (when Chef Ha worked for Think Coffee), and of course reached out to Chef Ha herself to learn more about her big win.

We came up empty—no reply, no comment, no information. We almost considered declaring this an act of Sprolen Valor when at last, some clarity arrived in the form of the @tvcheffantasyleague podcast. It turns out their engineer actually worked with Chef Ha at Think, and vaguely recalls her winning some sort of internal barista throwdown in the early 2010s.

Does winning an internal company event make someone a 'barista champion' ?? We say...absolutely! On April 12th, Bala of Taiwan won the 2026 World Latte Art Championship. This story was widely reported, including here on Sprudge. But now all mentions of Taiwan as they relate to Bala’s historic win have been removed and replaced from the official World Coffee Championships website, which today credits Bala’s win to Chinese Taipei.

This story was broken yesterday by @taipei_times — the World Coffee Championships have historically used Taiwan, the term generally preferred by the competitors and the Taiwan Coffee Association. The use of the name in WCC events goes back to at least 2007, when Taiwan was first represented by Van Lin in the World Barista Championship. Sprudge has record of it being used in 2010, the first year we covered the championships. In 2016 Berg Wu won the World Barista Championship representing Taiwan.

Per the Taipei Times, the switch to Chinese Taipei on the WCC’s website was made on April 28th. And indeed Chinese Taipei has now replaced all mentions of Taiwan, including the removal of an image of Bala standing on the WCC stage with the screen behind him noting he represents Taiwan.
