We know we are the lucky ones. So every year we make a donation to NGOs that work on the ground in challenging situations. This year, we’ve chosen to support the Shuhada Organization (SO), a non-governmental, non-profit, non-political, and independent civil society organization dedicated to the welfare and progress of Afghan citizens, with a particular focus on empowering women and children.

The Shuhada Organization was founded by Dr. Sima Samar—human rights activist, doctor, and author of “OUTSPOKEN: My Fight for Freedom and Human Rights in Afghanistan”—along with Mr. Abdul Rauf Naveed.

Studioilse for the 100 Hooks exhibition at JB Blunk Space.

A chunky hand-made brass hook that is visible and crafted. Elevating the everyday. ‘We all need hooks in our lives, not only physical ones’.

In our travels, we have found that many places would be better if they had hooks on the walls to hang things (clothes, hats, bags, etc) where they are accessible and visible, instead of closets where we put things and forget them.

Ett Hem Residencies, Stockholm, 2023

For us the interiors we inhabit are living things.

So for this reason with the Ett Hem Residencies we have paid attention to giving old things a new life, rather than bringing too many new things into the system. Refreshing rather than replacing. Consequently the majority of the pieces in the apartments are vintage, and bring with them the warmth that time gives furniture.

Where they are not we have focused on working with companies with embedded craftsmanship for example George Smith, Svenskt Tenn, the legendary Stockholm company that celebrates its centenary in 2024, and Lobmeyr the 200 hundred year old glass company from Vienna.

Ett Hem Residencies, Stockholm, 2023

The Ett Hem Residencies are in a converted Arts & Crafts building next door to the hotel. Designed to have flexibility of space and function, the key was to integrate these more functional elements into a fairly small footprint while maintaining the spirit of the original, with its strong focus on the essentials for mental and physical wellbeing.

The Ett Hem Residencies evolved from our observation that so many guests stayed longer. Whether they were between houses, between marriages, or between countries while working overseas, this was a crowd who wanted Ett Hem but with more elbow room to be able to WFH, have a kitchen, and their own front door.
