The third and final Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cutterhead has been lowered into the launch box at the T2D Project’s Central North Precinct in Hilton. The cutterhead was lifted and lowered by a 500-tonne gantry crane.

With the cutterhead now in place, the remaining TBM components will be assembled, before final testing and commissioning ahead of tunnelling beginning in the second half of 2026.

This massive shed at Waterloo Corner has already manufactured 1,000 precast tunnel-lining segments that are ready for installation in the T2D Project tunnels.

More than 55,000 concrete segments will be manufactured to line both the Northern and Southern Tunnels, supporting approximately 60 local jobs at peak production.

Once manufactured, the segments will be transported to the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch areas, where they will be placed on high-tech battery-electric Multi-Service Vehicles (MSVs), which will deliver them to the TBMs to construct the tunnel walls.

Assembly of the two Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) at the Southern Construction Precinct is progressing well. Meet Construction Manager Derek Whelan as he takes us inside the launch box, where crews are busy preparing for tunnelling to begin in the second half of this year.

We’ve made it easier to get from South Road into the city. 🚗

The upgraded intersection at James Congdon Drive and Sir Donald Bradman Drive opened earlier this year, improving access from the western suburbs and making it safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Here’s what this means for you:

✅ Three new right-turn lanes from James Congdon Drive onto Sir Donald Bradman Drive
✅ Extra through and turning lanes to keep traffic moving
✅ Upgraded pedestrian crossings
✅ New Shared Use Paths for cyclists and pedestrians

This upgrade forms part of the broader network upgrades package within the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, helping the road network operate efficiently during construction and into the future.

The new link road between Raglan Avenue and Edward Street is now open!

This upgrade includes a new dedicated through lane and a new right-turn lane at the upgraded intersection of South Road, Edward Street and the new link road.

Here’s what this means for you:

✅ Easy east-west connectivity in Edwardstown and Melrose Park by removing the dogleg movement of traffic at this key intersection
✅ You can access Raglan Avenue from South Road via the new link road
✅ Permanent removal of right-hand turns to/from South Road at Raglan Avenue.

In a carefully coordinated operation earlier this month, a 500-tonne gantry crane safely lowered the cutterhead into the 20m-deep Southern Precinct launch box at Clovelly Park.

Two of our Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) are currently being assembled and will soon be tasked with carving out the twin Southern Tunnels, excavating through soil and rock on the 4.5km journey towards Glandore and Black Forest.

From classroom to construction site, graduate engineer Thanveer Chenakkara Thajudhin’s journey on the T2D Project began at a career expo at the University of Adelaide.

“That chance meeting prompted me to learn more about the Project and apply for a graduate engineer role,” he said.

With a strong interest in the field and a master’s degree in construction management, Thanveer joined the civil and surface works team at the Northern Construction Precinct.

When asked for advice for other young engineers, he said: “This was my first construction job, so I came in with limited experience, but I brought tonnes of motivation and curiosity, and that helped me learn quickly.”

Major milestone 🚧

The 300-tonne cutterhead for the first Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) has been successfully lifted and lowered into the Southern Precinct launch box.

Assembly of the first two TBMs is now underway side by side, getting ready to carve out the twin Southern Tunnels as they excavate through soil and rock.

🎈💧 This is proof load testing of the 500-tonne gantry crane at the Southern Precinct construction site, a mandatory step in commissioning to ensure the crane is calibrated, tested and safe to operate at full capacity.

Our team used 18 waterbags, each holding 10–50m³ of water, to progressively load the crane. Waterbags are one of the safest ways to conduct this type of test, allowing load to be added gradually while the crane is closely monitored, rather than lifting the full load all at once.
