ゲルハルト・リヒターの初期の写真的なポートレート作品は単なる「写真の模写」ではない。

写真は一見、現実を客観的に記録するメディアのように感じられる。けれども実際には、それは流れ続ける現実の、ある一瞬を切り取った断片にすぎない。つまり写真は、対象そのものを完全に表しているわけではなく、「ある一点」を固定したものに過ぎない。リヒターは、その固定性に違和感を持っていたのではないか。

彼のぼかしやブラシの操作は、単にイメージを不鮮明にしているのではなく、その瞬間を再び時間の流れへ戻そうとしているように見える。「写真に連続性を与える試み」だ。同時に、そのぼかしは、「見る」という行為そのものの曖昧さも示している。

写真を見ると、そこに客観的真実があるように感じてしまいがちだが、しかし実際には、鑑賞者は自分の記憶や感情や先入観を通してしか写真を見ることができない。リヒターは、その不安定さをあえて表面化させている（続く）。

If I can share a personal interpretation for a moment, I’ve always been very interested in Gerhard Richter’s early photo-based portraits. I don’t really see them as simple reproductions of photographs.We often think of photography as something objective — as if it simply records reality as it is. But when you think about it carefully, a photograph only captures one fragment of reality. Just one instant, cut out from a continuous flow of time and experience.Reality itself is always moving, always changing. But a photograph fixes one moment and isolates it.And I sometimes feel that Richter was uncomfortable with that fixed quality.So when he blurs the image, or drags a brush across the surface, I don’t think he’s simply making the picture unclear. It feels more like he’s trying to return that frozen moment back into time again — back into movement, uncertainty, continuity.That’s why I personally see the blur not as a loss of information, but almost as an expansion of the image.At the same time, I think the blur also reminds us of something else: that seeing itself is unstable.When we look at a photograph, we tend to trust it immediately. We feel that the image contains some kind of objective truth. But in reality, we never see an image neutrally. We always look through memory, emotion, personal bias, cultural background.In other words, the viewer is never completely objective either.And I think Richter makes that instability visible.So for me, these paintings are not simply paintings based on photographs. They almost feel like proposals about how we should look at photographs in the first place.（to be continued)
