Fantastic night at the theater on a Monday night (!) seeing Wallace Shawn perform THE FEVER. He was extremely kind and spoke to us for a minute, and gave Nico some fab writing advice while telling us about the good sandwiches in Iowa City from his time in the @uiowawriting program. The performance was so great, the piece still resonates, and his kindness was everything. One of my artistic heroes, just lovely. ❤️

VAIM- Jon Fosse’s prose is like a weighted blanket for me— a form of comfort, yes, but also a firm embrace, unlike anything else. In this new piece, he explores the interior lives of three characters tied together by their relationship to a woman named Eline, the two boats named after her, and her desire to give shape to her own life through immediate, decisive action. They are not ready for her, no one is— she is a force of nature who simply wills her life into being. Reading Fosse gets better and better, he is one of my favorite authors, and this comic and moving story is just what I needed.

I am so proud to say Nico will be attending The University Of Iowa to Major in Creative Writing and Minor in Cinema Studies.

Of all of the schools we explored, Iowa was head & shoulders above the others in organization, communication, outreach, and interest in Nico. They also had the best fit for his major, with their Creative Writing program being uniquely great among all the schools we looked at. It has amazing faculty, the graduate assistants are in the Iowa Writer’s Workshop (one of the top graduate Creative Writing programs in the country, IMO), the school has tons of student published literary magazines, and best of all, they have a dorm floor where Creative Writing students can all live together called the Iowa Writers Living Learning Community (LLC).

We loved everything about Iowa City as well, a small, manageable college town with a great cinema, good restaurants, and everything extremely walkable from his dorm.

So incredibly proud of him and excited to have a place where he can pursue his passion for Creative Writing and Cinema Studies in a school & community that is so dedicated to writing and writers!

Now, to get this kid ready for independent living… four months to move in! *sob*

First @umichbball title since my senior year of High School! Great team, tough game… Incredible Season! 💥🏀💥

THE SISTERS- A 21st century epic about legacy, immigration, freedom, and the self, and how they are shaped by family. The story focuses on three Tunisian sisters (hello, Chekhov) — Ina, Evelyn, and Anastasia— who grow up in Sweden and whose lives spin in different directions, always orbiting the central relationship they have with one another, which is framed by their belief in a family curse. Standing just outside the frame and telling their tale is another young Tunisian Swede named Jonas Khemiri (also the name of the author), who shares their struggle with family, identity, the past and the self. Khemiri’s book takes an almost cinematic approach, with intercutting scenes and a central (and very loose) conceit about time that shapes the structure of the story. You could see Kaouther Ben Hania making the leap and making this a prestige limited series, for example. Anyway, a very accessible book, driven by sharply drawn and compelling characters. Extremely enjoyable.
