Bonfires on Lag BaOmer feel ancient… but they’re not in the Gemara

The first time we see it is from Rabbi Ovadia Bartenura, who saw fires by the kever of Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai in the 1400s.

So what’s the fire about?

The Zohar says that when the Rashbi passed away, his house was surrounded by fire as he revealed the deepest secrets of Torah.

Not destruction. Light.

And what started as a local minhag turned global, just like the spread of those teachings.

But here is the Pnimiyus of Matcha Tea.

Rav Itcha Meir Morgenstern explains that Tea in Hebrew is spelled Taf Hey. Which is alluded to in the tefillah of Tehay Hasham Hazos, shaas Rachamim veis ratzon milfanecha. This tefillah is describing the state of Klal Yisroel when they are completed nullified to hashem.

As Shavous approaches, we are getting ready for the wedding of hashem and klal Yisroel, of Yichud Kudsha Breichu ushichintay. To get to this yichud, a person has to give over everything he has to hashem. The way to start that is to realize that you already do. Because all your thoughts speech and action are about hashem. This is true for you and for every yid.

While it’s difficult to point to just one focus the Lubavitcher Rebbe emphasized during Sefiras HaOmer and Lag BaOmer, a central theme was Ahavas Yisroel. He encouraged reaching every Jew, regardless of background, to connect through mitzvos, but even more deeply, to foster genuine love and unity among the Jewish people.
In particular, the Rebbe placed a strong emphasis on children. He worked to make Lag BaOmer exciting and meaningful for them, most notably through large scale parades and programming that brought Jewish pride and Ahavas Yisroel to life in a tangible, joyful way.
