On World Press Freedom Day, we honour the courage of journalists and media workers who risk their lives to report the truth.

The Committee to Protect Journalists recorded 2025 as the deadliest year on record for media professionals, with 129 journalists and media workers killed worldwide. More than 60% of those deaths occurred in Gaza, with journalists also killed while reporting in Ukraine, Lebanon and Sudan.

The UK condemns all violence against journalists and calls for every attack on media workers to be investigated, with those responsible held accountable.

Free and independent media is essential to peace, democracy and accountability.

At her annual Mansion House address to the City of London in April 2026, Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper set out a clear message for a more uncertain world: confidence in the values that guide us - respect for the rule of law, the principles of the UN Charter, and the strength of the friendships and alliances we build.
