@univofmaryland Department of Computer Science Ph.D. student Hillary N. Owusu received an ACM-W scholarship to attend ACL 2026, where she will present research examining how irrelevant information can influence reasoning in large language models.
Advised by Affiliate Associate Professor of Computer Science Naomi Feldman, Owusu studies the anchoring effect in AI systems and how small, irrelevant details in a prompt can affect model judgment.

At the @univofmaryland, computer science researchers are working to build AI systems that do more than solve problems. They are exploring how machines can reason through them.
Led by Professor Mohammad Hajiaghayi and backed by a $2.6 million Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) grant, the project aims to develop AI systems that can generate, test and refine mathematical ideas.
Three computer science Ph.D. students Arshia Soltani, Iman Gholami and Danny Mittal are each contributing to a different part of the effort, from translating mathematical intent into machine-readable forms to studying where AI reasoning works and building multi-agent systems that can generate and check possible solutions.
