SINGLE OUT NOW: With «Happy Saturday Sadness» Hamburg based trombonist Lisa Stick introduces us to our new quartet, with Cesar Joaniquet from Aarhus on tenor and soprano saxophone, Anders Jormin from Gothenburg on double bass, and Heinrich Köbberling from Berlin on drums. The upcoming album «Live at Loft» will be out June 28 on Unit Records, the same day the band performs at Jazz Baltica‘s Timmendorfer Strand.

Luigi Archetti and Bo Wiget have been working together regularly on a wide variety of projects since 1994. They began performing as a duo in 1999. They often use their instruments as a source of sound for electronic manipulation and combine this with the analogue sounds of their instruments, which they play using extended techniques or in a traditional manner. The result is music that oscillates between improvisation, contemporary new music, electronic music and elements of experimental pop.

Similar to previous projects, this project entitled Gekritzel is once again a hybrid of working methods. The process begins with short solo pieces, which are then developed further together. Improvisations, electro-acoustic distortions and notated elements flow into one another.
In addition to the main instruments – Luigi Archetti’s electric guitar and Bo Wiget’s cello – other instruments are also used: toy piano, voice, recorder, electric bass. The working process for all previous albums has always taken several years. This is also the case with the present album, which, with 13 predominantly quiet compositions, has retained an improvisational character, as the title refers to.

We are excited to announce the recipients of this year’s Unit Records Artist Residencies – three outstanding musicians who will each spend ten inspiring days dedicating themselves to new musical visions in truly special places.

🌊 Our brand new «Artist in Residence» on the Azores goes to saxophonist and composer Simon Spiess. During his stay in Lajes das Flores in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, Simon will focus on developing new musical ideas and will also give a workshop for the children on Flores – connecting artistic research with community exchange.

🏔️ We are equally thrilled to announce pianist and composer Gee Hye Lee as this year’s «Composer in Residence» at «Aux Losanges». During her residency in the stunning Swiss Grisons, she will work on the compositions for her upcoming trio album, which is set to be released on Unit Records in late 2027 or early 2028

🌅 The Artist Residency at «Chalet Fur» above Lake Lucerne will be awarded to Geneva-based guitarist and composer Tom Brunt. Together with his acoustic quartet – featuring violinist Marc Crofts, guitarist Charles Fréchette and double bassist Pierre Balda – Tom will dedicate these ten days to intensive collective work and prepare for his upcoming album release on Unit Records.

Congratulations to all three artists! We can’t wait to hear the music that will emerge from these unique residencies.

Improvising is a way of making music that strives to be as open, as unconditioned, as sound-centered, as present and as process-oriented as possible. It is less a musical method than a form of consciousness. This album stands precisely at the boundary of all the subconsciously constructed cultural frameworks and is an attempt to break with the hierarchy of aesthetics. It is as much jazz as it is noise, and as much free improvisation, as much new music, as much punk rock, as much live sound design. It is a conscious and playful exploration of all the historical and musical influences of the participating artists.

«Il Ciclo Del Sole Noturno» by Meklin Nicolai Weiss is out today!!!

Il Ciclo Del Sole Noturno consists of two long, suite-like improvised tracks that unfold as cohesive sonic landscapes. Recorded on two separate dates four years apart in the same church, the distinctive acoustics of the space became as much a part of the improvisation as the audible environmental sounds. Sound designer Thierry Simonot shapes these conditions into a richly textured sonic work.

On vinyl, the music unfolds like a story engraved in grooves.
