The creators of TerraTech Legion, @payload_studios, turned to the unrivalled flexibility of the Unreal Engine to realise their vision for the ultimate ‘bullet heaven’ experience.⁣

The veteran devs opted for instanced skinned meshes to bring a frankly unreasonable amount of robotic destruction to players. Countless robotic foes. Customizable vehicle carnage. No complex engine changes.⁣

“As an experienced team with plenty of veteran developers on-hand, we’re always looking to push boundaries and take on challenges in creative ways. Unreal Engine’s sheer flexibility and crucially, access to the full source code, has been critical in empowering our ambitions.”⁣

“That’s been particularly important in our mission to add support for instanced skinned meshes. With TerraTech Legion’s focus on ‘bullet heaven’ mechanics, it’s imperative we get as many animated Legion bots on screen at the same time. It’s down to Unreal Engine’s adaptability that we’re truly able to deliver our vision of compelling chaos.”⁣

“The runtime part of this was possible without the need for complex engine changes - just by using the flexibility of the material graph, including some custom HLSL nodes.”⁣

“Having the ability to modify the editor c++ code was crucial for generating the data necessary for this. We transfer skinning information into static mesh UV channels that we aren't using, which then requires modifying the LOD generation code to preserve this data in LODs.”⁣

“For animation, we use the low-level parts of the UE animation system running in parallel on the CPU and then pass the resulting transforms to the GPU in a single floating-point texture. A per-instance value passed to the mesh instances allows each instance to render with the correct animation.”
