A couple of landscape photographers chasing beautiful light and perfect waves around the world.
Real places. Real photos. No AI.

I don't typically share vacation photos here, but I'm so psyched on this drone image that I'm breaking the rule on this one.
We've been sailing in the British Virgin Islands with friends for the last while enjoying a rare "vacation" amongst our usual craziness. We're back on land now, although our bodies still feel like we're moving on the water, which is bizarre and a little disconcerting. We'll be sticking around the islands for another month doing a little exploring and are hoping to add some tropical images to the portfolio.
Obviously should anything be "good enough" for my photographer OCD to allow into our fine art catalog, it'll show up here as well.

In the process of pulling together a group of shots for a marketing piece we’re developing for galleries, I found myself browsing the shots from our last visit to Sedona and found this little gem with a little more sunset color in the clouds. While the reflection isn’t as crispy as my OCD would prefer, I think maybe the overall vibe of this one is even better than others I’d pulled as favorites. What do you think?

We spent last week hiking our legs off in the Italian Dolomites, taking some much needed time off. While we tried our best to just relax we did end up squeezing off a handful of shots. Here’s one of my favorites from blue hour on our last evening out.

Every once in a while a shot comes along that can't be captured with the big cameras on the ground, so we send up the drone for a bird's eye view.
As we wound through these gorgeous turns on our way from Ouray to Silverton I wondered out loud if they might look cool from the air, and given that we were passing through at the peak of fall colors we decided to pull off and put the drone up for a look. While the turns look awesome and that group of quaking aspens in bright yellow definitely pop, the thing that surprised me getting the file back to the computer was the crazy color of the river running along the right side of the frame...
Since the gold/silver mining days in this area the mustard colored water has been documented, but became exponentially worse in 2015 when a group of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) subcontractors working at the abandoned Gold King Mine on Bonita Peak ruptured a retaining wall creating an instant environmental disaster as metal-laden acidic water gushed into the creek below. In total, three million gallons of arsenic, lead, cadmium and other metal sulfides rushed into the mountain stream and it's been this gnarly yellow color ever since.

As often happens with landscape photography, this evening in Monument Valley was as frustrating as it was rewarding. Although this was neither the composition nor the conditions we’d hoped for, I think what we came away with turned out quite nicely… That being said, the OCD part of my personality is already plotting our return ;)

After years of talking about it, we finally dipped our photographic feet into New Mexico… And straight into the alien landscape of the badlands. Aside from a VERY sketchy 3 mile walk out long after dark with somewhat dodgy GPS, this was an otherworldly evening that we’re not likely to stop talking about for quite some time.

So we pulled out this morning headed for Crested Butte, but noticed snow on the peaks and took a 3 hour detour to see if we could get this shot again but with some white on the peaks. The clouds were heavy and we had to wait over an hour for the sun to shine through. The light lasted maybe 90 seconds and despite relentless traffic during our wait, the photography gods granted us a huge 45 second window to nail the shot before the light disappeared! Huge thanks to Mother Nature for turning up for us today!

Happy Monday friends! For those who need a little entertainment this morning, I’ve told the story of these 3 shots (while balancing on a slack line) in a new video on my channel — YouTube.com/drewcain or check the link in today’s story (and my highlights).

We’re in Sedona for the next few days on a creative retreat… Though we’re not here to photograph, we couldn’t help showing up a little early for an evening hike and a few casual exposures. I honestly didn’t have any expectations for a photograph, but like any obsessive photographer, I can’t just take a hike without packing ten pounds of camera gear along. The afternoon had been dark and overcast, which both cooled down the drive through the desert and gave us a beautiful sunset.

New video live on my channel today of how we made this photograph of the Huntington Beach Pier. The initial idea was that because the pier is closed due to the virus, that we’d have the very unique opportunity to shoot it without any people on it (always my preference). What we didn’t expect was this incredible bioluminescent algae bloom and how it would impact the photo. I’m totally digging the almost abstract nature of this composition. What do you think?

We should be in Bali…
Our 6 month visas were approved, flights and lodging set and this time last week we were to have flown back for another extended photography and surf stay in paradise.
Our time each year on that magical island has become something we look forward to every spring. Living this life of constant movement and travel can be exhausting, and the months we spend in Bali are really our “down time” to recenter, plan our photographic year and most importantly recuperate our bodies and spirits.
We’d kept a watchful eye on the news as things around the world unfolded, hoping things would settle down and that we’d be able to go, but in the end did the hard thing and cancelled the trip.
Since then, like most of you, we’ve been hunkered down doing the responsible thing — which, if I’m being honest, has been really difficult for me mentally. We’re very fortunate to have wonderful and generous friends who have opened their home to us during this time of uncertainty (we’re gone some much of the year that we no longer keep a place of our own to come home to).
So, while we’re stuck indoors, like most other photographers out there, I’ve been combing through the tens of thousands of images from this last year, finding hidden gems as I work through files that I’d passed over in the bustle of traveling.
This image of Katja was shot on a remote beach with the drone just screwing around, but I really love the contrast between the black sand and the foamy water… I think I might have to print this one big for the wall.
Thought this shot would be a fitting entry for this week’s #pmphotoassignments as well — so c’mon Pete!

A week ago I took a cellphone photo of Katja at this spot as we got out of the water having surfed a glorious evening session at Trestles. The sunsets have been really bold here lately and tonight we decided to go back and take a few “proper” images to do the scene more justice. The waves were small, so we didn’t get in, but I think this shot sums up just how incredible the evening was standing there watching little waves roll through as the sun sank into the Pacific Ocean.
