Hello! 👋 We’re bringing our DIY inflatable art workshops up north again in February half term and wanted to see if any organisations are interested in commissioning some inflatable play!
WHAT: Drop-in all day indoor DIY inflatable workshops for young people (and adults!). Our inflatable sessions are a chance to build inflatable architecture, develop new motor skills and explore everyday materials in new and sustainable ways. How can we activate our homes, schools, playgrounds with plastic bags and tape? We have toured our workshops around Oldham, Bolton, Salford and Croydon already.
We also have two hand-made indoor inflatable worm sculptures (silver and colourful) to activate your space. We can make more of these if you are interested in commissioning this!

FLAVOURS OF RYE LANE
PART I: THE WORK
Regan Gilflin’s @regancreates mural Flavours of Rye Lane transforms the street’s culinary landscape into a striking new visual landmark. At the heart of Rye Lane is food; markets, restaurants, groceries, grills. Food is a way of learning about people, exchanging ideas and experiencing different cultures.
On Holly Grove, outside Peckham Rye Station, Regan’s mural depicts a woman’s braids flowing across the wall, each bead represents fruits from the local markets - starfruit, guava, jalapeños, pitangas - speaking to the international communities that shape Peckham’s food culture. The beads become a tribute to the stories carried through generations, through shared recipes and the proud hairstyles of the women who preserve them.
The mural was co-created through creative workshops with local residents, cooking meals alongside volunteers at Peckham Soup Kitchen, and interviewing traders along Rye Lane.
This project was produced by Get It Done and commissioned by Southwark Council.

We’re gathering on May 3 at 3 PM at Esat Hal and you’re warmly invited to take part in the public event of We Gather Here Because We Must.
Developed during the residency with artists from Türkiye and the UK, the installation and performance invite us to rethink public space as a climate commons shared, shaped, and activated together. 🌳💌
What happens when we become part of the space itself?

We looked at the SHAPE of our worm 🪱🌀🔸🟥 and made swirly, spirally shadow puppets that turned into snakes and axolotyls and more.
We looked at the MATERIAL ♻️🧱 of our worm and decided on experimenting with transparent coloured plastic.
And then we looked at the COLOUR 🌈 of our worm and made abstract viewfinders, holding the up to the window to change the colour of our worlds or placing them on the overhead projector to make more fun shadow play.
This is we call in the biz a material-led enquiry… aka let’s follow the thread and see what comes up! We love working in a open and flexible way that places children’s creativity and ideas central to the outcome. Let’s play more!

🌀 WE MADE AN INFLATABLE PLAYGROUND 🌀
Neat!! We brought our inflatables up to Huddersfield in February to take over @makerworldhudds at @childrensartschooluk and it was very fun…
Our participatory inflatable workshops are all about using recycled materials in inventive and sustainable ways (thank you @renee_materials for all our plastic needs!). How can you activate your homes, schools, neighbourhoods with some plastic bags and tape? It’s all about learning to play with what’s already around you.
Our group of young people cut and stuck together a mega patchwork of recycled plastics, inflating it to create a giant inflatable snake! These sensory workshops are great for young people to learn new making, testing and fine motor skills, and for adults to help them! (Shoutout dads in STEM)

Architecture studio Editional are developing play-based placemaking interventions in Longsight. As part of PLAY FULL, we invited them to work with our Creative Crews to imagine what these could look like.
Using chalk our young people drew different ideas for ‘floorals’ (floor murals!), games built into benches, obstacle trails and decorations to bring moments of play into the streets.
We’re very glad to say that some of these ideas have made it into the final designs and will be brought to life later this year!

Unbelievably behind on sharing our PLAY FULL project with @savechildrenuk…
Last time we shared we were making foodie faces. PLAY FULL took us on a serious journey! From co-designing playful fortune teller research games, to presenting ideas to decision-makers through sandwich houses, to running a market stall full of creativity and play.
But the children wanted their ideas to be seen and heard by more. We needed to stage a protest… Leading mass participation workshops in each school, over 1,400 children made parade artworks that shared their reflections on how play could grow within themselves, their homes and their schools.
In July, our three primary schools marched through Longsight with artworks, drums, banners and megaphones, led by our Year 5 Creative Crews.
Previously, local residents had raised concerns about safety in the park, so the parade became a way to reclaim the space – turning it into somewhere children and families could be together safely and celebrate the start of the summer holidays.
Genuinely hundreds of families joined in a relaxed day of play, exploring the park, building a creative cardboard city and even trying circus skills
