Originally released in 1998 on the iconic Japanese techno label Paratone, “Beat Per Love” by YO-C+B.U.S feat. KAORI has long been regarded as a hard house to techno classic from Japan. Now, in 2025, the track is being reintroduced to a new generation through a reissue by Tokyo-based label TREKKIE TRAX, featuring a freshly updated mix and a full suite of remixes.
Alongside the brand-new “2025 Mix” by YO-C+B.U.S themselves, the release includes reworks from scene-defining veterans such as SUGIURUMN, DJ TASAKA, ATT (JP), and DJ Shimamura, as well as current TREKKIE TRAX core members Carpainter, Seimei, and andrew. From techno and hard house to electro and bass music, the compilation spans a wide spectrum of styles, making for a diverse and forward-thinking 10-track collection.
The original version is also included as a newly remastered recording—preserving the emotional intensity and groove of the original while updating its sonic form for modern systems.

TOMO（以下、T）： ところでYO*Cは、なんでDJやってるの？
YO*C（以下、Y）： それは神様に言われちゃったから（笑）。天職であり、ミッションだからですね。そこはずーっと変わらないです。他の人がDJに対して構えている感覚とは、ちょっと違うのかもしれないですね。
T： YO*Cとずっと一緒にやってきて思うのはさ、君には「承認欲求がない」ってことなんだよ。
Y： たしかに、あまりないですよね。
T： 「純粋に楽しいからDJをしているな」ってことしか感じない。これって、現代のDJには非常に珍しいことなのよ。昔のDJはほとんどがそうだったけど。
Y： そうですよね。もともとDJって「黒子」でしたもんね。音楽さえそこにあれば、すごい狭いところでやらされても全然それで良かったんですよね。
T： 実際、昔のリキッドルームのDJブースって、コックピットみたいになってたじゃん。
Y： なってましたね。こっち側からは光も反射してるし、アクリル板みたいなのがあったから、フロアの前が全然見えなかったんです。だから、今でも意識的には人前に出るのって苦手なんですよ。そう言うと「嘘だ！」って言われますけど（笑）、お客さんの顔がズラズラズラって見えてたら、たぶん僕ちょっとアガってたと思うんですよね。
T： DJって、実は「自分がいいと思う音楽をみんなにも聴いてもらいたい」ってところが起点だから、「おれを見て！」っていうスタンスとは本質的に相容れないんだよ。だから、YO*Cの承認欲求のなさはすごく自然だし、それがみんなに伝わっているからこそ、今でもたくさんのブッキングがあるんだと思う。
Y： そうですね…どう考えても僕、これを「仕事」っていう認識でやってないんじゃないかな。だから、仕事としてしっかりやってる他のDJの方には、すごく申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱいなんですけど。ただ、それが若い人にどう映るのか、「これでありなのかな？」って思うところはありますけどね。

TOMO（以下、T）： 亀仙人やヨーダみたいなおじいさんになりたいんだよ（笑）。で、まあみんな年齢とか気にせずに遊んでくれればいいよねって思うし。そもそも本場でもトップDJにアラフィフはゴロゴロいるよ。ゲッタ、ティエスト、アーミン、アダム・ベイヤー、カール・コックスなんて63歳で世界最高峰のクラブ“UNVRS”のレギュラーだ。送り手がエイジレスなのに「いい歳になったから歳相応にすべきで、楽しいことしちゃいけない」なんておかしいんだよ。音楽自体は年齢なんて気にしないわけだからさ。
YO*C（以下、Y）： そうですね。こっち側が勝手に気にしてるだけで。
T： あと、「若い子がいないといけない」みたいなのも窮屈な考え方でさ。若い子がいようがいまいが関係なくて、彼らが「いい」と思ったら来るだけでしょ。
Y： そうなんですよ。受け取る側がどう捉えるかは関係なくて、ただ喜んでもらえればいいだけで。
T： 「若い子にウケなきゃいけない」ってのは一種の承認欲求だからね。おれ、そういう考え方あんまり好きじゃないんだ。来たければ来ればいいし、面白いと思わないなら来なければいい。それはどの年代の、どういうタイプの人に対しても同じ。
Y： そうですね。全く同感です。
T： 今回は小さいところから始めてるから、よりみんな「友達」みたいな関係でいられたらいいなと思って。
Y： そうですね、来ているお客さんと。そこがすごく閉鎖的にならなければ、それでいいですよね。
T： そう、オープンにね。もともとX-traの趣旨に「誰でも、どんな人でも気軽に楽しめる」っていうのがあって、それで料金も安くしてたんだ。今も他と比較して安いと思うんだけど、そのポリシーは変わってない。
Y： 当時も言われましたもん。メンバーズカードを持ってきた人に「これで週末、リキッドルームで2000円で遊べるんですよ。すごいことだと思いません？」って。
T： まあ、おれたちには「広めたいもの」があったからやってたっていうのがあるよね。たまに「YO*Cとおれがなんで一緒にやってるのか理解できない」って人がいるんだけど、これは「UKのクラブミュージック布教つながり」なんだよ。
Y： そうですね。一言で言えば極めて簡単です。
T： ニューヨークスタイルのクラブと違って、ロンドンのクラブってカッコつけてないんだよね。おれたちはX-traを「クールでおしゃれな人たちがたまる場所」にしたいとは全く思ってなかったし、今も思ってない。同じ音楽が好きな人が集まってくれればよくて、音楽でつながるってことが一番重要なんだよ。
Y： そうですね。
T： だからさ、わざわざ仕事半休とって前回来てくれた人がいたのはすごく嬉しかったし、いろんな人がいたのもいいと思った。上半身裸で踊ってた子も、自作のX-tra Tシャツで来てくれた人も、『Born Slippy』のTシャツの子もいた。それでいいのよ。それが好ましいんだよね。
Y： 渾然一体ですね。年齢も性別も趣味嗜好もファッションも、全部でたらめにぐちゃぐちゃの方がいいですよね。老若男女、十人十色で。
T： おれたちは、みんなが面白いと思ってくれそうなことをやっているっていう自負はあるしね。人生の半分以上をこれに捧げてきてるから。自分たちが一生涯かけて好きだと思えるようなものはこれだったんですよ。周りから見たら異常なことに見えるかもしれないけど。
Y： そうですね、そういうことですよね。
T： なので、そこにまたみんなが集まってくれると嬉しいなっていう感じですね。
Y： うん、そんな感じですね。

【今、’90年代リバイバルがすごい】

TOMO（以下、T）： 30年経って、今年の2月からX-traは再開したわけだけど。なんで？（笑）
YO*C（以下、Y）： 時期的に、すごいいいタイミングだったんですよ。今、’90年代リバイバルがすごくて。ちょっと遅かったかなって思うくらいで。せっかく’90年代にあれだけのことができたのに、このリバイバルのタイミングで見せられなかったらもったいないなと思って、平田さんにずっとラブコールを送ってたんです。
T： ラブコール送ってたっけ？
Y： 送ってましたよ、ずっと！去年も一昨年も。それでみんなで行ったじゃないですか、平田さんがお手伝いしてるミュージックバーに。「X-traやりましょう」って。あれ、そういう意味だったんですよ。
T： そうだったの？ てっきり、アメミー（元LOUD/X-traの中の人）がLOUDの名前の企画でイベントをやりたいってことだと思ってたよ。
Y： 違いますよ。最初からX-traをやりたかったんです！
T： そうか。あの時おれ、「今DJに興味ないんだよね」ってあっさり言っちゃって申し訳なかったな（笑）。
Y： いやいや、全然。あのLOUDのイベントがあったから、平田さんも「今、’90年代キてるね」って気づけたんでしょうし。
T： いや、実はそこは気がついてなくてね。おれが気がついた’90年代リバイバルって、マーロン・ホフシュタットとかキキとか、今二十歳前後の子が聴いてるような、’90年代の音をベースにしたモダントランスからなんだよ。
Y： 今、世の中的にも’90年代リバイバルがめちゃめちゃキてて、二十歳のモデルの男の子が中山美穂を「いい」って言ってかけちゃうくらいなんですよ。全く関係ない世相としても来てます。
T： そうなんだ？それもあって、'90年代に遊んでた人たちがまた遊び始めたっていうのもあるのかな？
Y： たぶん、それがリンクしやすくなってるんだと思います。
T： シティ・ポップの再評価みたいな、普通の音楽シーンで起こってることと同じってこと？
Y： そうです。娘が「平成ブーム」の話をしてて、「平成ブームって何？」って聞いたら、たまごっちとか、そういうものを指すんだと。
T： デジタル化が進みすぎちゃって、ネット以前のところに戻ってみたいっていう欲求があるんだろうね。おれが気がついた海外の動きも、EDMみたいに極限までスタジオ化・作り込まれたものに対して、「昔のダンスミュージックってもっと簡単なものだったんじゃね？」って原点回帰してるんだろうな。
Y： そうだと思います。そこにみんな戻ったんだと思いますよ。
T： 若い子の間でそれが流行ってるとすれば、おれらもまた何かを提示できるかもしれないね。
Y： そうなんですよ。若い子に'90年代に興味を持ってもらうチャンスがあるとしたら、今しかない。ただ、若い子はもっと先に進んでましたけどね。最近聴いたのは、もうBPM150超えで。
T： いや、おれもそうよ。
Y： やっぱり？
T： この間、YO*Cが言ってたじゃん。「おれから代わった時、もうBPM150いってて」って（笑）。
Y： 今若い子たちが踊ってるのって、もうシュランツなんですよね。
T： かといって、コアなガバとかシュランツみたいに超ハードってわけでもないんだよね。
Y： そうなんですよ。全然踊れるんですよね。
T： 欧米では、その辺のちょっとトランスっぽいやつが今流行ってる。メロディーがあるやつね。
Y： わかります。ただ、自分の守備範囲で考えると、トランスまでいかないものが自分の領域なので、自分のできる範囲のもので勝負できればいいかなと思ってます。
T： うん、わかる。そこはYO*Cとおれの分業だね。実はおれ、最初マーロンを聴いたとき「ダッさ！これはねえよな」って思ったの。でもそこで「待てよ？ 『これはねえよな』っていう感覚、おれハウスの時も思ったな」って。
Y： ああ、わかる。
T： だから、「これはねえな」ってことは逆に「アリ」だと思って聴き直してみたら、実はそもそも裏返って聴くべきもので、めちゃくちゃ良かった。実はみんなこういうの好きだよね、みたいな。こういうのをかける場所が欲しいなって思ったのが、『gaiden』をやろうと思ったきっかけでもあるんだ。前から、ただの「おじさん」じゃなくて「おじいさん」になりたいなってずっと思ってて。そういう歳になったってのもあるかな（笑）。
Y： ずっと言ってますよね。「かっこいいおじいさんになりたい」って（笑）。

【おれたち日本人DJで自前のシーンを作らなきゃ】

TOMO（以下、T）： なるほどね。その「広めなさい」って感じたのは、実はおれも同じなんだよ。おれは曲のデモテープを送ったら『HOOJ CHOONS』から国際電話がかかってきて。当時はネットがなかったからさ。
YO*C（以下、Y）： それはびっくりしますね。
T： うん、超びっくり。で、国際電話が来るくらいだから会いに行かなきゃと思って、A&Rのフィル・ハウエルズに会いに行ったんだよ。その時にロンドンのクラブを案内してくれたのがレッド・ジェリーで、そこからコネクションができて。ロンドンのクラブってなかなかエグくてさ、関係者の友達がいると日本人男子でも歓迎されるんだよね。
Y： すっごいよく分かります。あからさまなんですよね。日本のクラブにもそういうところありますけど。
T： で、彼らと一緒に行くと、『HEAVEN』のサブルームでボーイ・ジョージとかフランキー・ゴーズ・トゥ・ハリウッドのメンバーとかに紹介されるわけ。「マジか？」って思ったな。その頃、UKではザ・プロディジーの『Charly』が普通のポップチャートの1位になってて。
Y： ‘91年ですね。
T： そう、レイヴが超流行ってて。チャートも今まではカイリー・ミノーグとかだったのに、あっという間にオルタネイトとかレイヴものだらけになって。「これはすげえな、世界的にこういう流れが来るんだろうな」と思って。でも、当時の日本のクラブってニューヨーク志向だったじゃない？ だから、「これはおれが日本に持って帰って広めなきゃいけないんだ」って思ったんだよ。
Y： いやあ、すごい共感します。
T： その頃、フォトグラファーでオーガナイザーの久保憲司と知り合ったんだけど、彼はUKでロック系の写真を撮ってたくらいUK派だったから、「日本でロンドンスタイルのパーティーをやろう」って彼主導で始まったのが『CLUB VENUS』。おれたちはバレアリック系だったから、ポール・オークンフォールドやダニー・ランプリングとかも彼が呼んでくれてね。 当時の日本にはUKスタイルのクラブシーンは他になかったから、YO*Cを発見した時に「すぐにCLUB VENUSに入ってよ」って話になって、しばらく一緒にやってた。でも、海外DJがメインだったから「ずーっとこれやってても微妙だな。おれたち日本人DJで自前のシーンを作らなきゃ」って話になった。それがX-traの発端で、今から30年前。
Y： そうですね。早いものですね。

【もうDJやらないかもしれない】

TOMO（以下、T）： それでロンドンに行って、本場はレベルも違うからすっかりやられちゃったって話？
YO*C（以下、Y）： やられると思ってたんですけど、行ってみたら毎週毎週おねえちゃんから逆ナンか！？と思ったらタバコをたかられるし、カップルのケンカは始まるし、入り口でバウンサーと揉めて追い出されてる人たちにぶつかられるし…ろくな経験がなくて。「僕が思ってたのと違うかもしれない」と思い始めちゃったんです。当時のロンドンのクラブって、ハウスが始まってからだいぶ良くなってはいましたけど、やっぱりダサくて（笑）。
T： 日本人の男子はあまり居場所がないんだよね。女子なら歓迎されるんだけど。
Y： そうなんですよ。そういう経験しかなくて、「やっぱり僕には向いてないかもしれない」って、日本から持ってきたDJミキサーや、せっかく買ったターンテーブルを全部箱にしまって、ガムテープでピッチリ止めて。「もうDJやらないかもしれない」ってなったんです。行って3ヶ月くらいで。 その時に、レコード屋の「33」で買い付けをやってた方から「もし何かあったらこの人を頼った方がいいよ」と紹介されていた人に色々話をしたら、「騙されたと思って『Trade』に行ってみなよ」って言われて。そこに行ったら、もう人生の転機というか。今まで「ダサい」と思ってた歌モノとかピアノの曲とか、自分が「ノー」と否定していたものが全部流れてるわけですよ。それがものすごく良くて。自分が考えていた「こうあるべきだ」っていう概念の外側にあるものが一気に押し寄せてきて、自分の中で大転換が起きたんです。それで、閉まったターンテーブルの箱を開けて、DJブースで教えてもらった曲を1日100回聴く、みたいなことをやってました。
T： ああ、『Trade』なら日本人男子も歓迎されるしな。
Y： そうですね、違った意味でも（笑）。みんなすごく優しかったですし。そこから1年半くらい、もう毎週毎週『Trade』に通いました。
T： あの頃、一番マッドなイベントだったもんな。
Y： そうですね。木曜日の夜から月曜日の朝までずっと営業してたんですよ。そこでトニー・デ・ヴィットとか、スモーキン・ジョー、マルコム・ダフィーとかのプレイを聴いた時に、もう神様が見えた気がして。「君はこういう曲を日本に持って帰って、DJとして広めなさい」って言われたような気がしたんです。

【日本画の勉強がしたいからロンドンの学校に行かせてください】

TOMO（以下、T）： ロンドンには何年留学してたの？
YO*C（以下、Y）： 2年半ぐらいですね。
T： 大学？
Y： 高校卒業して、本当は美大に行きたいなと思ってたんですよ。僕、日本画とか掛け軸が好きで、墨絵を描きたかったんです。でも、代ゼミの造形学校とかに習いに行くと、木炭デッサンとかをさせられるんですよね。「おれが描きたいのは水墨画とか枯山水みたいなものなのに、なんで木炭デッサンをやらなきゃいけないのかな」と。通っているうちに、「宮本武蔵の絵とかって、誰かに教えられたわけじゃなくて自分で何かを見つけたわけだよね」と思い始めて。教わってる時点でもう終わってるなと思って、学校にも行かなくなっちゃったんです。 それで親に「日本画の勉強がしたいからロンドンの学校に行かせてください」って説得して、留学させてもらいました。
T： なんじゃそりゃ（笑）。ロンドンに日本画の勉強ができるところなんてあるの？
Y： ないですよ、そんなところ（笑）。別に学校なんか何でも良かったんです。とにかく遊びに行きたかったんで。一応、美術系の基礎を教えてくれるところがあって、そこからセント・マーチンズとかに行きたければ行けるんですけど、僕はその前の、おじいちゃんやおばあちゃんもいるようなコミュニティカレッジみたいなところに行きました。だから、当然学校はサボるわけです。
T： で、そこから毎週クラブに行くようになっちゃったわけだ。クラブで遊び始めたのはロンドンに行ってから？
Y： いえ、高校卒業が決まってロンドンに行く前にも、CAVEに行ったりはしてました。他にもエンドマックスとかジオイド、あとGOLDもありましたね。
T： 結構チャラいところにも行ってたんだ？
Y： そうです。友達が行けるところに一緒に行ってましたから。でも、「自分の好きなのはこれじゃないな」って感じていて。

YO*C（以下、Y）： 振り返ってみると、きっかけは大きく2つあるんですよ。最初、中学生の頃は真面目な生徒だったんで、放送部員だったんです。お昼の給食の時間に、交代で放送室に行って曲をかけてたんですよね。機械もいじれるし面白そうだなって入ったんですけど。 ある日、そこにヤンキーの先輩が乱入してきて、「これかけろよ」ってボニーMの『ハッピー・ソング』を持ってきたんです。先生もいないし、怖い先輩だったから「ダメです」とは言えなくてかけたら、意外とかっこよくて。それで、吉祥寺の新星堂にそのレコードを買いに行ったんです。その時の店員さんに「僕、こういう感じの曲が欲しいんですけど、他におすすめありませんか？」って聞いたら、デッド・オア・アライヴとかが出てきて。それが最初のきっかけでしたね。
T： なるほどね。
Y： そこから高校生になった時、周りに遊んでる同級生が多かったんで、大貫憲章さんの「ロンドンナイト」とかに連れて行ってもらったんです。そしたら目の前でDJの人が曲をつないでて、「DJミキサーってこういうことができるんだ！」って初めて知って。そこからものすごい興味が湧いちゃったんです。でも、調べてみたらミキサーがめちゃくちゃ高くて。家にターンテーブル1台しかない状態が続いてたんですが、高校を卒業してロンドンに留学することが決まった頃、夜遊びで知り合った友達の中に機材を持ってる人がいたんですよ。その友達の家に泊まり込んで、ずーっと触らせてもらったのが2つ目のきっかけですね。 あと一番大きかったのは、ガルトデップの齋藤久師くんっていう人が「33」っていうレコード屋の店員さんでいて。その人が「こういう曲が好きなら、作るにはAKAIのサンプラーとRolandのシーケンサー、あと303っていう機械を使うんだよ」って色々教えてくれたんです。彼の家に行ってミキサーとターンテーブルを触らせてもらったりもしました。
