💙 Where the world comes for answers

In its 17th year, HAIRraising for Boston Children’s Hospital raised $153K and counting! John Frieda himself couldn’t resist the allure of the annual fundraising event where Boston area salons come together to host their own cut-a-thon. All funds raised go directly to The Benderson Family Heart Center at Boston Children’s Hospital. Our hearts are so full of gratitude for all those who participated this year.

In August 2024, Mia’s pediatrician in Florida heard a murmur and told her and her family to visit a local cardiologist. After receiving the news that Mia would need open-heart surgery for an atrial septal defect (ASD), her parents joined online support groups to research their options. ❤️🩹
They learned that Boston Children’s offers a unique treatment option to repair an atrial septal defect, called a thoracotomy. Instead of accessing the heart through the chest, Mia’s ASD was treated with a small incision underneath the armpit, resulting in quicker post-surgery recovery.
She recently came back for a one-year check-up and has been better than ever! 👏 Learn more about how we treat atrial septal defects in the link in bio.
After 5-year-old Emily was diagnosed with an atrial septal defect (ASD), her family searched for an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery. A second opinion request led them to Boston Children’s, where our heart team performed a minimally invasive thoracotomy repair. Just weeks later, she was back to gymnastics and school. We’re whaley in love with our newest additions 🐋✨ Say hello to the stunning mama and baby whale sculptures now welcoming everyone at the front of the hospital — plus a smaller version inside the Sky Bridge! They’ve already made quite the splash and are bringing smiles to patients, families, and staff 💙
A huge thank you to @STUDIOKCA for designing "Star," the official name of this incredible addition to our Boston Children's family!

In honor of Brain Tumor Awareness Month, we’re checking in with our friend Jenny, who we first met a few years ago when she underwent surgery for a glioma. This 7th grader has been busy! Along with reading, playing soccer, running cross country, and competing in middle school speech tournaments, she’s planning a two-week backpacking trip. 🤩👏
“Jenny and our family love keeping in touch with Dr. Baird to review her annual brain scans — all of which have been clear since her surgery,” says her dad, Scott. Way to go, Jenny! Read more at the link in bio.

Did you know there is an alternative to traditional open-heart surgery for repairing an atrial septal defect (ASD)? At Boston Children’s, our experts have pioneered a minimally invasive approach called a thoracotomy—which uses a smaller incision under the armpit, rather than an incision in the center of the chest.
For many patients, it can mean less pain, shorter hospital stays, and a faster return to everyday life. Learn more about this unique treatment option at the link in bio.
