RIP to one of the greatest improvisers of all time, Sonny Rollins 🎷🤘

One of the first songs I ever learned on sax was his original composition, St. Thomas.

This is a clip from when I was just 6 weeks into playing, at age 10, at my very first recital. I still play this song to this day.

I’ll never forget the first time I got to meet and play for Sonny.

When I was looking for my very first horn, I met Emilio Lyons, the legendary “sax doctor,” at Rayburns music in Boston. He found me my first beautiful saxophone.

Legends like Sonny, Stan Getz, and Branford Marsalis trusted Emilio with their horns. Those who knew Emilio know why.

One morning when I was probably 12 or 13, Emilio called and said:

“Sonny Rollins is coming in this morning. Come in and meet him. Bring your horn.”

There we were at Rayburn Music in Boston. Just Sonny, Emilio, and me.
Sonny encouraged me to play for him (!!!). I was SO nervous.

After I improvised, he smiled and said:“Nice, sounds like you like to improvise. I do too.”

Then he told me about his practice routines and how he would spend entire sessions just improvising.

A couple years earlier, when I first started sax, one of the very first songs I learned was St. Thomas. I just knew I loved that melody.

That same year, I saw Sonny live and hoped so badly he’d play it.

I’ll never forget him walking onstage, his coolness radiating, big hair, bright red Converse shoes. (I later begged my parents for purple Converse because of him 😂)

The whole concert went by, incredible, but no St. Thomas.
Then came the encore..and that melody began. 🎶🎶

I still remember the excitement of 10 year old me hearing the song I was studying, played live by Sonny himself.

Sonny brought it all that night, and it changed my life. There is endlessly more to say about his mastery, sound, and genius, but this core memory has always stayed with me.

RIP to one of the all time greatest. Thank you maestro for all you’ve brought to the world of jazz and to all the sax players out there!!!!💔
