John Tree — Bucket Seat
When considering a pair of objects in the bathing space, I was drawn to study how people sit in a bathing situation. From bath houses, saunas and onsens to simply bathing one’s children at the end of a day there is a need in many cultures for a low stool in the bathroom. (also good for kids to brush their teeth) This low stool seems to always be accompanied by some sort of container for carrying or pouring water on yourself or the person you are bathing.
In my case I remember when as a child my parents would sit on an old milking stool and wash me in the bath. I remember having to close my eyes tightly as they rinsed the shampoo out of my hair with a small plastic bucket. I did much the same with my kids.
So I was exploring a simple wooden seat with a plastic scoop with a handle as a sort of spout so that you could have some control when washing soap out of a kids hair. But as I was developing these separate objects I had the realization that if the stool was also plastic it could be a bucket by simply flipping it. So what began as a pair objects became one, but with two functions.

Aldo for @allermuir
Aldo is a familiar typology - steel frame with plywood seat and back. I wanted to lean into this and create a collection of simple chairs that work comfortably in a wide range of environments.
Through repeated samples and test rigs we developed super ergonomic seat and back parts that sit on precisely welded tube and plate frames which provide rigidity and a compact stack. The quality of metalwork allowing a gloss finish which is notoriously unforgiving on defects.
Fixings between frame and backrest are completely hidden with a clever die cast assembly that also facilitates removal and repair.
Through this focus on quality and comfort Aldo is a quiet chair which can fit anywhere and be appreciated through use.

We previewed a single side chair last year during @fultonmarketdesigndays and have been continually working on refining and growing the family ever since.
@allermuir will present the Aldo family of cafe seating next week during @clerkenwelldesignweek and in June again at @ful
The side chair is joined by an arm chair, stools and high chairs.

Based in London, @johntree_ approaches design with precision, where simplicity is the result of rigorous thinking and engineering. Collaborating with brands such as Motorola and Hydro, and recognized by the iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award and Japan’s Good Design Award, his work is also held in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.
Through pieces like the Annex Table, Billet Chair, Hoop Lamp and Truss Chair, he explores material and structure with clarity and restraint, proving that innovation lies in refinement.

Annex tables for @haydesign
The design was kept deliberately simple with a focus on proportions and flexibility to allow the family to work in many situations.
However the extruded connection between the apron and leg presented an opportunity to push the apron further back under the table to accommodate chairs with arms.
This created a detail that connects the structural elements and the family visually.

Excited to share a new project this evening at the @snedkernes_efteraarsudstilling
Developed in partnership with @muutodesign exploring this years theme of transformation.
Foundry is system based around a cast aluminum leg that can be repeated to provide tables and desks of various sizes.
The simplicity of the system encourages reuse and reconfiguration to maximum longevity. And as a single part in as single material the leg is designed for simple end of life recycling.
Designed to support a range of tops it is presented with glass to highlight its modular construction.
Thanks to Snedkernes Efterårsudstilling for accepting me as a guest this year and to all the team at Muuto for their support and input. Particularly…

Annex was from the start a collaborative project with @rolfhay and his teams very hands on approach.
As we went from paper and card models through to working prototypes and full size samples to verify the extruded connections and constructional strength it was a big team effort particularly from
@gustavmaxlindholm
@rui.pereira_
@samnewman
@martinsolem
And the whole team at @haydesign who come together and work so hard during @3daysofdesign
The aluminum is @shapesbyhydro 75R (75% post consumer recycled) and tops are available from @kvadratreally that is from recycled textile waste.
And thanks to my assistant @frankwinter__

Annex for @haydesign is a program of tables that bridges domestic and contract use while seeking to work in both without compromise
Built on a strong, economical, and flexible connection between leg and surface there are three families. Round, square, and a more modular family with rounded corners that follows the frame below.
The extruded aluminum connection joins legs and frames in oak, natural anodised and powder coated aluminium. While different height legs provide both regular and counter heights surfaces.
Tops are in linoleum, laminate, oak and a recycled fabric ‘Really’ surfaces from Kvadrat.
The range of finishes and carefully tuned proportions keep the three families flexible yet neutral, providing a focus on materials with a subtle and reassuring visual strength.
