Marbling the edges of the pages of a book! 😰 I have to say, I was holding my breath with each dip on this one. But I loved how it turned out! Watch to the end for the reveal! Definitely want to do more edge marbling… Actually I have a v exciting project coming up that’s going to have some tasty marbled edges, can’t wait to share that one with you too! 🔮
Each marbled fabric notebook is finished by hand, by me 🙋🏼♀️ The slow, repetitive pace of bookbinding is so satisfying to me, I love seeing all the parts come together into a beautiful tactile cloth-bound notebook, and then adding someone’s personalised name or initials to make it extra special 💛 These are all available in my SHOP link in my bio x
I’ve been v busy back at the marbling tray this week making another batch of hand-marbled notebooks inspired by the garden for @sarahravensgarden 💜🪻🌿
Thank you for all your lovely comments and purchases leading up to Christmas! 🫶 These are available on Sarah Raven’s website, there’s a direct link in my bio links 👆
✨ Adding gold foil details to a book’s spine with traditional heated hand tools! I heat these manually on a stove to just the right temperature 🔥
The key then is to apply the right amount of pressure, whilst rolling it slowly across the spine in a STRAIGHT line, oh and trying not to burn my thumb whilst aligning it into position 😂 I enjoy the challenge of trying to do things in bookbinding that make me hold my breath 😳
Part 2! Whilst @mariposa_london is working on the stunning cover embroidery, I’m working on the book’s insides ☺️ (See a sneak peek of an embroidered butterfly wing in this vid!)
We chose the beautiful Peacock Butterfly (Aglais io) from the book, as the main inspiration. I’ve matched the threads Lou is using in the embroidery in my marbling paints! The black, green, brown and orange in the background of the marbled pattern represents those sections of the butterfly wings, and the cream and blue blobs on top replicating the eyespots (ocelli) seen in the beautiful Peacock Butterfly!
Follow along to see me looking tense marbling the book edges (part 3), and sewing the matching endbands at the head and tail of the book (part 4). And of course the incredible cover embroidery reveal still to come from @mariposa_london 🙌😱
Part 1 of rebinding the Butterfly Book! First up we’ve been working on the artwork for the book’s SPINE! 💫 This will be covered in this lovely burnt orange cotton. The front and back cover will be a deep olive green with a colourful, show-stopping 3D(!) embroidered butterfly by Lou! Follow along to see the journey take flight 🦋
The next re-bind project is on the bench!! And I am soooo excited about this one 🥹 I’m working with the incredibly talented Lou of @mariposa_london to create a full rebind with her stunning embroidery, some foil-blocking, endbanding and marbling from me! What a DREAM come true collab! Follow along to find out what we do with this beauty 👀….
🐛🦋 What’s your favourite butterfly? (Or moth? Don’t forget the moths.)
✂️ It’s all in the DETAILS! Am I right?! 🤌 Making lots of little marbled cloth endbands for a wholesale notebook order today 🫶
