Almost showing up.
Almost caring enough.
Almost being the man

And maybe that’s the worst part
not the absence,
but the hope that keeps surviving it.
The hope that shatters each time

The sorrow burns my eyes
The hope feels like fire
The pain rips open each time

the anger,
the confusion,
the disappointment

They say a girl needs her dad

But I have learned
what it means to grow around that absence

Because hope,
even bruised has shaped me to be someone

who notices what’s missing,
