Growing to a metre across in arm span, spiny spider crabs are certainly impressive creatures. Perhaps most impressive however is that these gentle giants are whole ecosystems in their own right. Planting seaweed on their shells for camouflage, they can support over a dozen different species of seaweed on a single crab. This in turn hosts a wide variety of smaller crustaceans, marine worms, sea squirts or even small starfish. All of which may live their entire lives on the shell of one crab.

Petition to rename the catwalk the “heronwalk.” 👠
Today’s runway: a mossy tree, placed to help reconnect habitats and create natural bridges for wildlife.
The photographer: a wildlife camera hoping to capture a pine marten - but this heron stole the spotlight instead with its graceful stride, alert gaze, and statuesque posture.
Just watch how perfectly still its head becomes when it locks onto prey in the river. Hopefully it got its prize.
9/10 performance, would love a flashier finish ✨️
And it works: the more phrases his song has, the more mates he attracts. 🎶
These birds are summer visitors, so now is the ideal time to spot them! To hear the sedge warbler's striking song for yourself, head to a marsh, reedbed or wetland and look out for them perched on reeds and willow bushes. 🐦

This striking insect is the birch sawfly. 🪰
The largest of sawflies found in the UK, they can be recognised by the pale band on their abdomen and by their bright yellow-tipped antennae.
This weekend is due to be a sunny one, perfect for Bank Holiday adventures. Let us know what wildlife you discover! ☀️

Wildfires have tragic consequences for wildlife 🐦️ 🦋 🐍
Reminder for this bank holiday:
🍽️ BBQ at home - not in the countryside
🔥 Never light open (camp) fires
🚮 Take all litter home - especially cigarette butts
🚒 If you see a wildfire, call 999 with the exact location
Together, we can help protect Devon’s precious wildlife 💚

Have you seen a pine marten in Devon? 👀
Our pine martens have been exploring far and wide, with sightings popping up in some unexpected places! These brief images and videos were captured by supporters across Devon.
At this time of year, sightings may include pine martens searching for mates or simply exploring new areas.
If you spot one, we’d love to hear from you. Please send your photos/videos, plus the date and location, to: pinemartens@devonwildlifetrust.org

Exeter Children have been speaking up for wildlife 📣
As part of the recent Wild Exeter consultation, our Schools Officer worked with the @nationaltrust and @the_rhs to capture the voices of some of the city’s youngest residents.
Their message was clear: they want more green spaces, more time outdoors and more wildlife. 🌳🛝🦋
Having this would help the children’s wellbeing, improve their curiosity, and build a lasting connection with the natural world.
This Outdoor Classroom Day, think about how you could bring more outdoor learning into your teaching space.🧑🏫

Not often captured on film – a stoat carrying a rat back to its den.🐀
Stoats are small predators, with long, low-slung bodies perfectly adapted for hunting rodents and even rabbits larger than themselves. 🐇
They belong to the mustelid family, alongside weasels, otters and pine martens, and can be active both day and night. They’re most often spotted bounding across open habitats such as grassland, heathland and sand dunes.
Stoats usually raise one litter of young each spring, so perhaps this determined hunter was taking its prey back to feed its family.
Have you seen any stoats recently? 👀

This little bee is having a tasty lunch! 🐝🌼
When the video slows down, you can even spot the tongue of this female hairy-footed flower bee as she drinks nectar from the flower.
These important pollinators help spring flowers thrive and are commonly seen in gardens, parks, and roadside verges.
This World Bee Day, you can support bees by planting some of their favourite flowers, including primrose, comfrey, and dead-nettles.

The Devon dating scene is getting wild. 😘
It's mating time for our common lizards, who will then go on to have their young in July. Unusual among reptiles, they incubate eggs inside the body and 'give birth' to live young rather than laying eggs!
Have you spotted a lizard so far this spring? 🦎

Can you spot the little fledgling? 🪶
The adult buzzard paces along the log, watching over its young below. At this stage, fledglings usually have most of their feathers and leave the nest just before they can properly fly. But they can already perch, hop and explore on foot.
This little one still has a watchful parent close by for support and a lot to learn.
The trees were felled by the landowner to create natural crossings, and it’s wonderful to see wildlife already making such good use of them.

The shot vs. behind the scenes
Our Director, Simon, and Reserves Officer, Claire, had a fantastic day hanging out with the Pearl Bordered Fritillaries flying at Dunsford Nature Reserve. 🦋
Have you been lucky enough to see any?
