This year, KitMapper turns 10! We’re incredibly proud to see how the company’s grown and adapted to London’s ever-changing creative (and financial) landscape over the past decade. A massive thank you to all our clients who’ve trusted us with their projects. We’re chuffed to be part of London’s international creative network, adding to the vibrancy of its creativity, providing employment, professional development, and skill-sharing for our team and freelancers, and backing the next generation of artists and creatives.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll be showcasing some of our favourite projects and milestones.

And where would we be without the amazing talent who brought the KitMapper brand to life. @patrickfrystudio for our original stencil design and coming up with the flag. @benjaminredgrove for his stewardship and development of the brand and refining it for KitMapper’s new life as a production organisation. At Somerset House’s 25th Birthday Weekend, we are also presenting an exhibition, Along More Latent Lines, which brings together new and recent works by the core team at KitMapper, marking the first time these staff members have exhibited together. The exhibition offers a collective reflection on signal, systems, and slippage. Created by KitMapper staff, whose daily work supports artists and exhibitions across the UK, these pieces are a testament to porous space between production and practice.

The weekend will be filled with a diverse programme of free, family-friendly events, installations, performances, and workshops, highlighting the rich creative community of Somerset House residents and giving the public a rare glimpse behind the scenes of artist studios and lesser-known spaces like The Deadhouse and Maker Street.

We’ll be opening two installations, including immersive work by @geneticmoo, based on their two large-scale touring exhibitions: Magic Place – a fast, playful 8-bit environment inspired by the magic of home computing and the golden age of video games – and Microworld, a digital ecosystem filled with creatures that respond to audiences in life-like ways.

Genetic Moo is a collaboration between creative coding couple Nicola Schauerman and Tim Pickup. 
They create joyful, immersive, and interactive family-friendly experiences for museums and galleries, inspired by popular science, ecology, artificial life and evolution.

Genetic Moo have received numerous grants, awards, and commissions, with their exhibitions engaging more than half a million people in the last decade. 

These works are part of KitMapper’s touring exhibitions offer and services.

It is on until 14 September and free to visit at the Courtyard and Seaman’s Hall of @somersethouse.

The Spell is a new sculpture, a sleeping figure encased in glass, with a mesmerising soundscape composed by @maxwellsterling.

The Dream is a 24/7 radio broadcasting live from Somerset House and online featuring original contributions from artists, writers, ecologists, and academics.

Supported by @CockayneFoundation Grants for the Arts, a Donor Advised Fund, held at The Prism Charitable Trust. Commission and touring made possible with @ArtFund support. With additional support from Jingmei Liu and Gathering.

A few months later, we pitched a solution to provide crew support for Anicka Yi’s incredible Hyundai Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern, In Love With The World. Drawing on our network, we assembled a team of talented individuals who took care of the install, maintained the aerobes, and problem-solved throughout a complex live installation in one of the most iconic public art settings in the world.

It was exactly the kind of project we needed coming out of the COVID years, something that gave us purpose and brought renewed attention to our work. We're endlessly grateful to Anicka Yi and our colleagues at Tate for trusting us with it.

Continuing to look back at 10 years of KitMapper in our birthday month. 2020–2021 was a tough period. No getting around it. Projects were non-existent, but more importantly, the art community as a whole suffered deeply. Arts workers and the institutions they were tied to faced immensely precarious situations.

Midway through the summer of 2021, we heard whispers of a project at Tate that needed creative solutions to some tricky technical challenges.

A few months later, we pitched a solution to provide crew support for Anicka Yi’s incredible Hyundai Turbine Hall commission at Tate Modern, In Love With The World. Drawing on our network, we assembled a team of talented individuals who took care of the install, maintained the aerobes, and problem-solved throughout a complex live installation in one of the most iconic public art settings in the world.

It was exactly the kind of project we needed coming out of the COVID years, something that gave us purpose and brought renewed attention to our work. We're endlessly grateful to Anicka Yi and our colleagues at Tate for trusting us with it.

Looking back at the moments that defined what KitMapper is today, we thought it would be fun to revisit the jobs we took on that we never expected to.

Starting with our CRT wall and later expanding into projection and lighting, KitMapper has provided equipment and crew for a number of high-profile, screen-based productions, with a big emphasis on music videos.

We’ve been involved in productions for Ahnoni and the Johnsons, Biffy Clyro, KSI, and the Manic Street Preachers for Radio X. The Manics shoot stands out as an early moment where we worked alongside instantly recognisable names in the music world. As a teenager, before he discovered his beloved punk and hardcore (and definitely not death metal, as some team members would suggest), our own Dave would have lost his mind to be locked in a studio with the Manics for an afternoon, quietly plumbing in some video cameras and CRT TVs.

Through SYSTEM, GAIKA told the history of sound system culture and challenged media perceptions of the Notting Hill Carnival. The project showcased stories, characters, statistics, and the under-celebrated sound system culture of the Carnival and beyond.

For this project, KitMapper was involved from the early conversations with GAIKA. We worked with GAIkA to achieve his vision for the installation, sourced sound systems—including a large one for the room—and hired a totemic Sound System (reportedly owned by Eartha Kitt) for the sculpture's centrepiece. The piece incorporated live feeds from thermal cameras, archive footage from Trinidad, and photos of the rich history of the Notting Hill Carnival, all of which provided a backdrop to a 16mm film by GAIKA.

The installation served as a real-world, architectural access point to an audio-visualinterpretation of Notting Hill Carnival's archival source material. Designed to be an interactive, functioning, large-scale audiovisual sculpture, visitors can plug in and play music across the entire sound system.

To celebrate KitMapper's 10th birthday we will be looking back over a decade of small builds and major projects. In preparing these it's been great to look back at what we have achieved and to remind ourselves of the amazing people we have worked with.

In summer 2018, we took on our first major project as a production company, in the form of the Royal College of Art School of Communications final show. This job set the tone for how we continue to work in education settings around final shows and special projects. Dave had previously run the as a freelance showrunner for the School of Communications, but this was the first time KitMapper were able to quote for and deliver a large-scale build for more than 130 students in a newly completed office space in White City.

We aimed to deliver the best possible show, at a time when some students, having moved from their original studio building, may have felt the conditions were less than perfect. And from this show we learned that in the high-pressure environment of a degree show, kindness is as essential as technical skill. KitMapper continue to work on projects for Universities, we now deliver the whole show for every school at the Royal College of Art, work throughout the year at London College of Fashion and provided fabrication and install for UCL School of Media this year. We continue to deliver kit hire through Kitto to Goldsmiths, RCA and UAL and this year we consulted on the degree show at Ravensbourne for the first time.

Since the 2018 @rcasoc show, we have watched many of those exhibitors go on to lead educational programmes, make remarkable art, patent products, win awards and build resilient creative communities. We are proud to still be in touch with many of them today.
