Kalea Dream - experimental music video by Erwan Tracol.
I met Erwan online when I was a teenager, and we mostly bonded over movies and music.
We’re both from the same part of France - Drôme and Ardèche - and even lived in Lyon at the same time, but never really crossed paths.
Fast forward a few years: I moved to Nantes last October and I realized he was living there too and was involved in an experimental film collective.
One afternoon, I went to check out his work.
He had rolls of film hanging around his neck and showed them to me one by one on a screen in his lab. Totally magical.
I felt an immediate connection between his work and Kalea Dream, and I asked if he’d be down to make a video for the track. And here we are!
The video is an experimental essay with chemigrams on expired 16mm film. Chemigrams are images created without a camera, using only chemicals, resists, and photosensitive materials.
« When Tryphème asked me to make a music video for Kalea Dream, I asked her what the lyrics were about. She told me it was a list of racehorses - so Kalea Dream is the name of a horse. I guess I used chemigrams as a way to imagine what a racing horse’s dream might look like. »
