On this day in 1976, Queen Elizabeth II sent her first email using ARPANET, becoming the first monarch to do so.

The moment was closely connected to UCL.

Professor Peter Kirstein, founder of UCL Computer Science, helped bring ARPANET to Europe, enabled the connection used in the demonstration, and captured the iconic photograph.

50 years on, it remains an early milestone in the history of global networking.

We’re so proud that four semiconductor ventures founded by UCL researchers have been selected for the latest ChipStart UK cohort, the government‑backed incubator for the UK’s most promising early‑stage chip companies.

Spinouts from UCL make up one‑third of this year’s cohort, and are all from UCL Electronic and Electrical Engineering (UCL EEE):

Abacqus (Professor Neil Curson, Dr Taylor Stock and Associate Professor Mark Buitelaar from UCL EEE / London Centre for Nanotechnology): building a modular dopant‑in‑silicon quantum computing platform, enabling scalable qubit systems compatible with industrial fabrication.

Orbicom (Dr Yilmaz Gul, Professor Sir Michael Pepper and Dr Stuart Holmes from UCL EEE / LCN): developing a semiconductor spin‑orbit qubit architecture with improved coherence and control for future quantum processors.

Altro Photonics (Farah Comis and Dr Alfonso Ruocco from UCL EEE): creating the photonic integrated circuit platform to power the next generation of classical and quantum data centres.

Nibras Communications (Dr Amany Kassem, Prof Zhixin Liu, Dr Zichuan Zhou and Alex Bennett from UCL EEE): designing ultra‑low‑noise photonic signal sources for satellite and high‑performance communications.

Congratulations to all the founders!

Have you heard about the tunnels under UCL (Bloomsbury campus)?

Do you know more about their original use?

📰 From a 2005 Times Higher Education article:

“A series of Edwardian tunnels links buildings at the western end of University College London's campus. One connects the department of anatomy with the Rockefeller building on the opposite side of Gower Street.

This twisting route is still used by staff and students. More passageways, now blocked or barred by locked doors, ran to other clinical departments in University College Hospital.

Like many medical sites, the tunnels were intended to enable patients - and bodies - to be transferred between buildings in private.

The 1956 film The Man Who Never Was , which told the story of a British attempt to mislead the Germans about continental invasion plans, is reputed to have been filmed in the subterranean complex.”

We discovered many online discussions and articles about tunnels under universities in the UK and around the world. It seems it is a global phenomenon. 🌎
