Class Day is tomorrow! 🎓
As we gear up for the ceremony, we're hearing from a few of our almost-alumni about the moments, mentors, and mindsets that shaped their time at Columbia Engineering.
Sean Hall (BS, Industrial Engineering & Operations Research) found his "aha" moment in a healthcare operations class — realizing that Emergency Department wait times, ambulance positioning, and transplant waitlists are operational problems with real mathematical structure, and that solving them has a tangible impact.
Yierfan Maierdan (PhD, Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics) leaned into Engineering for Humanity through his research on bio-based and earth-based construction materials, working to reduce environmental impact without compromising performance.
Taewan Yoon (MBAxMS) spent some of his time at Columbia co-leading the AI Club, growing it into one of the campus's most vibrant organizations with 900+ active members and 100+ events — a community he built alongside his co-president and close friend, Jose Miguel Luna.
Congratulations to the Class of 2026 — we'll see you tomorrow. 🦁 #SEASTheWorld2026 #ColumbiaEngineering

Class Day is tomorrow! 🎓
As we gear up for the ceremony, we're hearing from a few of our almost-alumni about the moments, mentors, and mindsets that shaped their time at Columbia Engineering.

For Salutatorian Samir Farraj, engineering is a responsibility.
Born and raised in Amman, Jordan, Samir came to Columbia with an early commitment to using science to serve others. That mindset has shaped everything he did on campus — from his hydrogen fuel cell research with faculty member Dan Esposito to his summer research on water scarcity and carbon capture in Jordan to his future work as lead process engineer at AquaPoro, scaling atmospheric water-harvesting systems.
His advice to future students? "Forge your own path and trust your instincts. Pursue what genuinely excites you." @cu_cheme
Congratulations, Samir! #SEASTheWorld2026 #ColumbiaEngineering @columbia @cu_cheme
