"I have Zinzi and Ryan, and there's no two guts I trust more," Proximity Media co-founder Sev Ohanian says. "I bring the data, they bring the guts."

The trio of Ohanian, Ryan Coogler, and Zinzi Coogler founded @proximitymedia in 2018. The production company is home to the box office shattering and Academy Award winning vampire film "Sinners"—which broke the record for the most Oscar nominations in history earlier this month.

In this episode of The Truth About Leadership, the founders discuss navigating impostor syndrome, balancing their personal and professional relationships, and what they learned from their first jobs.

Over the past two and a half decades, three women’s professional hockey leagues had launched and collapsed, victims of fragmented ownership, insufficient funding, and infrastructure that couldn’t support elite athletes trying to build full-time careers.

So future hockey hall of famer Hilary Knight was skeptical when she joined a players’ committee to negotiate terms for yet another new league.

But the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) shattered the mold. It launched in January 2024, and just months later, set a pro women’s hockey attendance record for a single game. It expanded from six to eight teams for its second season, and attendance jumped 52.5% season over season.

But none of this would have happened had the league not taken critical steps before the first puck ever dropped.

Click the link in our bio to read about how on-ice innovations have powered the PWHL’s growth.

As a 29-year-old lawyer new to living in New York City, Sarah Vacchiano was thrust into the world of Big Law, eventually representing media-described “Poker Princess” Molly Bloom—the inspiration for Aaron Sorkin’s Academy Award-nominated film “Molly’s Game.”

Over a decade later, @sarahmvacchiano and @immollybloom remain close friends, and their relationship is the true star of Vacchiano’s contemporary fiction book “Soft Launch,” released earlier this year.

“She’s the thread of my own coming-of-adulthood story,” Vacchiano says about Bloom. “I didn’t know myself as a person. I didn’t even know myself as like a friend at that point in adulthood... Our friendship really helped me grow into myself as a person.”

Independent bookstores are beacons of hope, offering intangible commodities such as connection, empathy, and knowledge, in addition to physical books.

The convenience and discounts of Amazon have long threatened their very existence.

Andy Hunter created Bookshop.org in January 2020 to help independent bookstores survive by utilizing e-commerce.

“I was watching as half of the bookstores in the country went out of business as Amazon grew,” he says. “There were over 5,000 bookstores in the American Booksellers Association in 1995, which is one year after Amazon launched. By 2019, that had gone down to 1,889, so more than half of them disappeared.”

But he never could have predicted how the pandemic accelerated his company's growth.

The State Department revealed a first look at a line of limited-edition passports designed to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American independence, featuring a large image of President Donald Trump’s face.

There’s one important caveat: These special passports will only be available at the Washington Passport Agency in D.C., and the Bulwark reported that there will only be 25,000 available. It seems likely that only a very limited number of Americans will get their hands on one.

That presents a question: Why even make these in the first place?

The parent company of Hinge and Tinder is courting a potential new addition to its roster. Match Group on Monday announced a $100 million investment in Sniffies, a map-based cruising platform for queer men.

As part of the investment, @sniffiesapp will continue to be led by founder and CEO Blake Gallagher, the company said.

“From the first conversations with the Match Group team, we knew they understood what makes Sniffies different. This partnership is about supporting that, not redefining it,” Gallagher said in a statement on the Sniffies Instagram—which was met with skepticism by followers.

Sniffies launched in 2018 and has three million monthly active users via its web-based platform.

The job search is exhausting: an application, several rounds of interviews, skills assessments, and, increasingly, even a work trial.

Work trials are when an interviewee is asked to complete job-related tasks over a short period of time so an employer can evaluate how they perform in a real working environment before making a hiring decision.

As recruiters and hiring managers sift through a flood of applications that can sound increasingly similar—especially in the age of AI—these trials have emerged as a way to evaluate candidates in real time.

This shift raises important questions: Are work trials a better predictor of success than an interview? Do they risk exploiting candidates’ time and labor? Do both sides benefit? And are longer, more immersive hiring processes here to stay?

Click the link in bio to read more about the pros and cons of work trials.

The Trump administration is putting America on the fast track to a good trip.

On Friday, April 24, the Food and Drug Administration granted an expedited review process to three experimental psychedelic drugs.

It issued priority vouchers to three currently unnamed companies, two of which are expected to research psilocybin as a treatment for depression, and one that will study a drug called methylone, a stimulant similar to MDMA (the main ingredient in the street drug ecstasy), for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Those vouchers shorten the FDA’s review process from its standard 10 to 12 months to just one to two months, meaning FDA-approved psychedelics could arrive as soon as this summer.

FDA commissioner Marty Makary said in a press release that psychedelics “have the potential to address the nation’s mental health crisis, including conditions like treatment-resistant depression, alcoholism, and other serious mental health and substance abuse conditions.”

Plug-in solar is on the way, and it could cut your electric bills. A growing number of states are poised to pass bills supporting the panels, which are designed for DIY installation.

A new calculator helps you estimate how much you can save on power bills, using your zip code to estimate how much sunshine you get and how much you’re paying for electricity now.

“A huge percent of this country is composed of renters,” says Cora Stryker, cofounder of nonprofit Bright Saver. “What are you supposed to do? I mean, it’s really a powerless feeling—pun intended—to see your energy bills just spike and not be able to do anything about it.”

Homeowners who don’t want to invest in a full rooftop system can also use plug-in panels. Designed for self-installation, they avoid the costs of permitting, inspections, hiring an electrician, and the marketing expenses of solar companies, which together make up nearly half the price of traditional systems.

Do CEOs actually listen to interns' ideas? Mark Breitbard, CEO of Global Gap Brand, says he does.

"I had two interns in particular this summer that I brought to various meetings," Breitbard says. "One had a really interesting idea that was sort of related to licensing and collabs."

Breitbard's emphasis on trusting the creatives embedded within Gap has led to a sort of renaissance for the denim brand.

When he was named president and CEO of the Gap brand in 2020, Breitbard and his team set to work closing unprofitable stores, streamlining inventory, and reinvesting in quality. The fix wasn’t flashy, but it paved the way for what came next: putting Gap back into the cultural conversation.

The southern side of the Colosseum in Rome is where the empire’s elite once entered the grand amphitheater to watch gladiators fight to the death, and where a series of earthquakes over its nearly 2,000-year lifespan have chewed away at the structure.

Through deep archaeological research and a clever architectural intervention, the ancient monument’s original layout has been restored after centuries of decay.

It’s giving modern day visitors a more accurate sense of how the space was originally used.

“The perimeter of Colosseum was not clear,” says architect Stefano Boeri, known for his tree-covered Bosco Verticale towers in Milan. “The emperor used to enter from that side. So it’s very important.”
