“To Communicate” is a composition for radio transmissions, feedback and live electronics that intertwines sonic research with a deeply personal dimension. The work originates from an antenna designed by Sante Gava, a radio amateur since the 1970s, capturing signals that are processed in real time and combined with live electronics.

Through radio waves, noise and hidden soundscapes, the piece explores the expressive potential of radio signals as living matter, unveiling a constantly shifting acoustic environment. Noise becomes both space and language: a field where sounds emerge, overlap and disappear through interference, listening and discovery.

At the same time, “To Communicate” is an attempt to build a dialogue — a bridge between father and son, across generations and different languages — where sound becomes a tool for connection and a possibility for relationship. An open-ended process shaped by attempts, misunderstandings and mutual listening.

The work premiered in May 2025 during Closer at Villa Davia (Borgo di Colle Ameno, Sasso Marconi, Italy), as part of the celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of Guglielmo Marconi’s birth. A second version was presented in February 2026 during Radia Mini-festival di radioascolto at the Memoriale Veneto della Grande Guerra (Villa Correr Pisani, Montebelluna, Italy), a festival dedicated to collective listening practices, of which Usmaradio has been official partner.

RADIA Mini Festival è un’iniziativa del Comune di Montebelluna e del Memoriale Veneto della Grande Guerra promossa e finanziata dalla Regione Veneto nell’ambito della L.R. 25/2022 “La Grande Guerra infinita”.

Per chi non la frequenta, la musica elettronica sperimentale può sembrare un enigma di cavi e macchine. Ma al festival Radia, sabato 21 scoprirete che è l’esatto opposto: è il tentativo più estremo e umano di restare in contatto.

Per iniziare a capirci qualcosa, alle 17:00, la ricercatrice @johannmerrich ci guiderà tra i reperti della mostra ‘Comunicare in Guerra’ per scoprire come il rumore e la tecnologia bellica si siano trasmutati in un linguaggio artistico.

Alle 20:30, il documentario “Comunicare – un figlio, un padre, una radio” di @andreijrublev ci porterà dove Guglielmo Marconi cercò di sconfiggere il silenzio, per raccontare la storia di un dialogo tra due generazioni, dove la tecnica diventa una lingua comune per superare le distanze.

Alle 21:30, il concerto “To Communicate” darà voce a questa ricerca. Al centro, la radio: uno strumento nato nelle trincee per scopi bellici, che oggi viene riscattato dall’arte. Attraverso antenne, feedback e manipolazioni elettroniche, i segnali catturati dall’etere si trasformano in un paesaggio sonoro vivo, un’improvvisazione che trasforma il trauma del passato in una connessione presente.

Venite a scoprire come una tecnologia nata per la guerra possa farsi poesia, e come il suono possa diventare il ponte definitivo tra un padre e un figlio.

@paolo_pandin created this video in collaboration with ECC (European Culture Centre, Venice) during the exhibition “Personal Structures. Beyond Borders” in 2024. He filmed more than 30 works by artists from all over the world and then transformed their images into a new visual journey.

Andreij Rublev’s new album “Implosions” will be released on December 5.

"Implosions" is a collective work that involves many amazing creative people.
The artwork and the graphic design, as well as the physical prints of the album, are drawn by eeviac, who deals with graphic for music since 1999 (Iosonouncane, Xiu Xiu, Zu, Musica per Bambini, Trovarobato and many many others).

When we saw it for the first time it blew us away. A visual translation of the album's concepts: a compressed cube made of bodies, emotions and their representation in the internet era, the technology that shapes our life.

This artwork also inspired us to create a special packaging for the physical editions of "Implosions", but no spoiler! More info soon.
