Join us in celebrating the women at BC Ferries who connect the coast.

Today is the International Day for Women In Maritime, a global day led by the @imo_hq recognizing the contributions of women across the maritime industry and the importance of building a more inclusive future at sea and ashore.

Women remain significantly under-represented in maritime worldwide, making up approximately 1% of seafarers globally and 19% of the broader maritime workforce according to IMO data. The good news is that the number of women around the world choosing this sector as a career continues to grow.

At BC Ferries, women make up 34% of our overall workforce. While there is still more work to do, we’re seeing encouraging progress, including a 46% increase in the number of women working in Deck, Engineering and Trades roles over the past seven years.

Today is an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the women helping shape the future of the maritime industry at BC Ferries and around the world.

We continue to see strong demand for travel, including work, essential services, tourism, and increased activity linked to the FIFA World Cup 2026™.

Preparing for peak season is a months-long, system-wide effort across our operations. This year, that includes:

• Earlier start to summer schedules on June 11
• 22 vessel refits completed
• Full 37-vessel fleet ready for summer
• 630+ seasonal hires and earlier training
• 1,800+ additional round trips added
• More reservation capacity and Saver fares
• New tools like sailing alerts and waitlists

Our focus is on delivering reliable service with the capacity we have today, while managing growing demand during peak periods.

We’re encouraging customers to plan ahead, book early, and travel outside peak times where possible

Vehicles travelling Horseshoe Bay → Nanaimo (Departure Bay) must be booked and prepaid. No drive-up fares available due to construction at the terminal. A gentle reminder to disarm your car alarms before boarding to help ensure a comfortable voyage for our crew, passengers, and furry travellers.
