Episode 4 of The Lighting Plan

Aron Sanchez-Baranda @waterbod , has spent the better part of a decade working alone in California tide pools, documenting marine life in macro, building one of the most visually singular bodies of work you can find. His images have screened at Times Square’s Midnight Moment, the Venice Biennale, and Neo Shibuya TV in Tokyo. He directed visuals for avant-garde musician Arca.

In this episode, Aron takes us on location to a tide pool in Long Beach, CA, to demonstrate his process firsthand.Shooting a California Sea Hare in macro, using a single LED light in place of the sun. What sounds simple is actually a precise and well practiced technique.The challenges are controlling color, intensity, and angle in a harsh environment, that disappears with the tide.

This is what a lighting plan looks like when the location is the ocean floor.
