One week of music camp with @gavinbryars in Aulus-les-Bains, deep in the southern French Pyrénées. I was stoked to be part of this retreat with my dear friend and bandmate Dean Harada @floteson of @loihirecords alongside fellow artists. We all got to live together in this 200 years old house, take masterclasses with Gavin, work on our music projects, go for nature walks, eat tasty vegetarian meals and party karaoke style. Through the week, I composed a piece where I had sampled my grand parents’ upright piano, hauntingly detuned over the decades, and adapted my flute playing to match its unpredictable (a)tonality. The result is a Gagaku-esque piece which reflects the slow paced and experimental mindset that the camp brought about. On the last slide: an excerpt of the piece I’m calling “Focké Paris,” which is just the name of the piano maker, but the pun couldn’t be more apt for the concerns of my grand parents’ old age, the decay of things and finding beauty in the cracks. Much love to everyone at the camp, what a tremendous week 💫

didn’t expect to get into a jolly medley but hearing it in loops took me higher, calling it “Ciel En Arc” (an inverted take on the french word rainbow which would roughly translate as Curved Sky)
