Another wonderful Whistler Film Festival (@whisfilmfest )

It was an inspiring, electric few days at WFF. It was great to celebrate amazing creators, connect with our friends in the industry and wander through the village (or sometimes running through the village to get to the next meeting).

As always, the highlight of the festival for our organization is the Screen BC Short Film Pitch.
5 incredible filmmakers pitched their projects to a live audience with only 15 minutes to present their ideas and answer any questions by our panel of judges.

The 5 pitch participants were chosen out of 37 projects submitted this year.

Their voices, vision and personal connections to their stories were inspiring. We want to thank them all for their thoughtful and exciting proposals.

Ana Carrizales, La Loba (@anagowild
Kevin Ang, After Party (@skyloreang
Alex Vance, Cryptid (@a_hodgie
Lauren Marsden, Angela (@lauren__mars
Anaïsa Visser, Franken Me (@anaisavisser

We are pleased to announce the Screen BC Short Film Award winner is Kevin Ang with After Party 🎉

The pitch for After Party was poignant, heart wrenching and a beautiful exploration of the afterlife. Looking forward to seeing this next year!

What a treat, we also screened Norman Li’s (@norman.yi.li ) film, Adverse Possession, a wonderful, wild ride of a horror film with incredible performances and some terrifying twists and turns.

A huge thank you to our in person judging panel:
Lynne Lee (@alwaysmisscheerful
Corey Payette (@coreypayette
Kurt Harder (@kurtisdavidharder

Our moderator:
Hans Dayal (@tremblinglamb

Our event producer:
Kristyn Stilling (@k_stills

Our deliberation panel:
Julie Stangland
Teri Snelgrove (@tsnelgrove
Dominique Roy (@dommakingthings

Thank you to the whole team at Creative BC @creativebcs (thank you Robin Macabulos and Mathew Parry), BC Film Commissioner Marnie Gee and our board Treasurer, Amy Lang, for the introduction to our short film award.

And of course, a huge thank you to our entire Screen BC (@screenbc ) board, and our Executive Director, Leslie Wootton, for their ongoing support of the Short Film Award.

Halfway through 2025, we’ve already experienced an array of highs and lows.Looking ahead, the BC industry is finally getting the traction it needs to get BC’s talented industry professionals back to work.
With large scale shows like The Last of Us, Shōgun and God of War) landed in BC, while BC productions like Murder in A Small Town, Allegiance, Wild Cards and Family Law are renewed, the uptick in BC is landing with the BC industry tax credit enhancements now passed into legislation by the BC Government. The BC Film Commission currently reports 34 projects in BC, so the second half of the year should see stronger employment across the workforce.
How we will continue to succeed going forward will be measured by our efforts to build on our advantages to compete with production jurisdictions that are aggressively implementing strategies for their own success.
BC Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport (TACS) Ministry is embarking on industry consultations this year to build a Provincial Film Strategy for BC. Screen BC will collaborate in this effort and also drive the industry led strategy for a stronger, more diversified and resilient production sector in BC.

Screen BC 2025/26 Board of Directors: This is the work ahead. We thank each one of you for volunteering your time to do the work that will help us continue to thrive!

Our June featured Screen BC member is T.C. Brotherston, Filming Coordinator of the City of Burnaby. The City of Burnaby Film Office was opened in 1987 in response to the growing need of coordination from the city for the newish film industry at the time. Now the Burnaby Film Office is a key component of British Columbia’s thriving film and television industry. Located within Metro Vancouver, Burnaby has become a significant hub for film production, benefiting from its diverse locations, film-friendly policies, and world-class studio infrastructure.
T.C was born in Winnipeg, and he moved to BC in 2011! After working a variety of jobs, he found his footing as an event planner at the Vancouver Aquarium, where he eventually began promoting the site for filming—an opportunity that led to his current role with the City of Burnaby.
The past few years have been a whirlwind for them. From COVID, to the Industry Strikes and Labor Disputes, the unknown impact of A.I. He said “There is always something on the horizon to be aware of and that can be very tiring. Currently the challenge I feel the most is the rise of streaming platforms content boom, but recent financial struggles have made these companies more cautious”. T.C also sees the budget cuts and project cancellations have become more frequent as studios prioritize profits content over new content, which has led to a slow down.
But for T.C the film industry is more than just bright lights and cameras; it’s a community. It’s made up of hardworking, creative, and passionate individuals who bring stories to life. Films can shape our cities, not just economically, but culturally. Productions that film in B.C. support local businesses, create jobs, and showcase us audiences around the world. But more than that, industry brings people together. It fosters collaboration, innovation, and a shared love for storytelling that connects us all. A good movie or TV show can bring joy to people, help them escape into anther world and can comfort in times of need and he loves being a small part of that process. Thank you T.C and everyone at the Burnaby Film Office for all you do to support the film and television industry!
