Department Head Ali Jadbabaie and Prof. Gioele Zardini were in Madrid for the World Infrastructure Forum (WIF) Advisory Committee Meeting — helping to shape the agenda for WIF 2026 alongside global leaders from engineering, finance, technology, and beyond.

CEE is a founding academic collaborator and co-lead of WIF — because the infrastructure challenges ahead are too complex and too consequential for any one sector to solve alone.

Graduate student Quinn Early has been named a fellow of the prestigious 2026 NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program.

This fellowship will support his research in the Howland Lab, where he uses high performance computing to study atmospheric turbulence, which is crucial to modern energy security challenges such as extreme events, power system reliability, and the emerging impacts of new and novel energy infrastructure. His research aims to develop predictive models for large-scale wind energy systems that remain accurate in realistic turbulent and stratified atmospheric environments.

CEE has appointed Prof. Benedetto Marelli as Associate Department Head and Undergraduate Education Chair.

As Associate Department Head, Marelli will join the department's leadership council, supporting a broad range of administrative responsibilities including faculty promotion and departmental priorities. As Chair of the Undergraduate Education Committee, he will lead curriculum innovation, work to grow enrollment, and integrate entrepreneurship into CEE's educational offerings.

"I look forward to seeing how our department and undergraduate program will continue to flourish under his leadership,” said Ali Jadbabaie, Department Head and JR East Professor.

CEE is pleased to announce that Dave Des Marais has been granted tenure by MIT, effective July 1, 2026.

Prof. Des Marais’ research focuses on understanding the mechanisms of plant-environment interaction. Using tools from molecular, quantitative, and population genetics, researchers in the Des Marais Lab identify the physiological basis of plant response to environmental cues and ask how these mechanisms constrain or facilitate plant breeding and evolutionary change.

CEE is pleased to announce that Tami Lieberman has been granted tenure by MIT, effective July 1, 2026.

Prof. Lieberman studies microbial evolution in real time, with a focus on mutations occurring within individual human ‘microbiomes’ – the set of microbes that live in and on us during health. Her lab is interested in understanding the molecular determinants of colonization success in complex environments and enabling the precise manipulations of microbiomes in the clinic and the environment.
