After having worked together on multiple projects and occasions Maarten Buyl and Raphael Malfliet have decided to join forces and are very happy to introduce Extant to you!

Extant is a non-profit artistic production platform with a focus on multidisciplinary practices in the open field of contemporary sonic arts.

We are looking forward to support artists-in-residence in the creation of new compositions, installations and performances and in the development of their methodological and technical skills within a sustainable social and environmental framework.

Inherently nomadic, Extant activates an ongoing creative and critical exchange among artists, researchers and listeners. To realize its projects and activities, Extant often establishes a prolonged and interdisciplinary dialogue with various local and international partners within the cultural landscape.

The mysterious European nightjar lives in heathlands, pine forests, and drifting sand dunes. During the day, you will hardly spot this well-camouflaged singing marvel resting on pine and birch branches — you need a fair amount of luck for that. But at deep dusk and during the night, its distinctive rattling song reveals its presence. A singing nightjar can produce up to 1,900 notes per minute! During the mating season, you can also hear the male vigorously clapping its wings together while in flight.

On the evening of the 13th of June we will head to the Kalmthoutse Heide for a listening and recording session. Using different microphone setups and under the expert guidance of bird guide Chantal Van Gool from Vogelwerkgroep De Stadsmus, we will immerse ourselves in the sonic living world of the European nightjar.

We are excited for another Extant Excursion, this time featuring a presentation by critically acclaimed sound artist Francisco López!

López is internationally recognized as one of the major figures of the sound art and experimental music scene. For almost forty years he has developed an astonishing sonic universe, absolutely personal and iconoclastic, based on a profound listening of the world.

In this presentation Francisco will discuss how his sound creative practice has been shaped over the past 40+ years by two main environments of influence that divert from common music training: the independent home-music worldwide network (starting in the late 70s) and the influence of ‘real world’ sonic environments, particularly from nature. He will present these realms in a much wider social and historical context, recognizing and discussing the immense influence they have had on a gigantic community of sonic creators worldwide for several decades now.

De curatoren van Getemde Natuur vroegen zes hedendaagse kunstenaars om te reflecteren over de relaties tussen stad en natuur.

Zes nummers, zes locaties in de stad en zes luisterervaringen.

Componisten en geluidskunstenaars Maarten Buyl en @raphaelmalfliet zien de tentoonstelling Getemde Natuur als een kans om het zogenaamde niemandsland te verkennen: de ongedefinieerde ruimtes die niemand kan claimen. Veldopnames vormen de basis van de sonische landschapsportretten waarmee Buyl en Malfliet reflecteren op de gelaagde geschiedenis van stedelijk groen.

Haastige ontmoetingen tussen wandelaars, joggers en fietsers, op Linkeroever zoekend naar een ritme in de natuur die buiten de stadsgrenzen bestaat, terwijl hun geluidsportret van het stadscentrum een tot nu toe onbekend Antwerpen onthult. Hun doorsnede van het Operaplein, waar groen opvallend afwezig is, klinkt heel anders. Luister naar het album via de link in bio.

The curators of Tamed Nature included six contemporary artists reflecting on the relationships between the city and nature.

Six tracks, six locations in the city, and six listening practices.
Composers and sound artists Maarten Buyl and @raphaelmalfliet see the exhibition Tamed Nature as an opportunity to explore the so-called no man’s land: the undefined spaces that no one can claim. Field recordings form the basis of the sonic landscape portraits with which Buyl and Malfliet reflect on the layered history of urban greenery.

Hurried encounters between walkers, runners and cyclists, On Linkeroever they are looking for a rhythm in the nature that exists beyond the city limits, while their sound portrait of the city centre reveals a hitherto unheard Antwerp. Their cross-section of Operaplein, where greenery is conspicuously absent, sounds completely different. Listen to the album via the link in bio.

The Sound of Tamed Nature

As part of the Flanders Architecture Institute’s exhibition Tamed Nature—which explores the layered history of Antwerp’s urban green spaces, from the creation of 19th-century city parks to the rise of climate activism—Maarten Buyl and I will present our collaborative album Niemandsland in a live performance. Using field recordings, we create sonic landscape portraits that reflect on how urban greenery has been shaped, transformed, and reimagined over time.

The performance will be accompanied by Antwerp’s city poet @esoheweyden who wrote a series of new poems specifically for this event!
