Today on What's My Frame I'm joined by Casting Director, ⁠Betsy Ware Fippinger⁠. Betsy has trained under some of the best Casting Directors in New York, including Meredith Tucker and Ellen Lewis. As a Casting Associate and Assistant she worked on projects directed by Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Bo Burnham, Greg Mottola, and Lynn Shelton.

Betsy won an Artios Award for her work as the Casting Associate on the pilot episode of ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’. As a Casting Director, Betsy cast Sarah Friedland’s ‘⁠Familiar Touch⁠’ (in theaters now, and winner of three awards at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, including Best Debut Film) and co-cast Nicholas Colia’s ‘Griffin in Summer’ (winner of three awards at the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival, including Best Narrative Feature).

She also cast the lead youth roles for Kelly Fremon Craig’s ‘Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret,’ for which she won her second Artios Award. Before entering casting, Betsy worked at HBO and The William Morris Agency, and taught at Indiana University. She graduated with a BA in Film from Wesleyan University in 2003.

Betsy's openness and heart for actors is evident in this conversation. We chat about creative process and a few of her recent projects. One of my favorite quotes from this episode is "doing what you love regardless of the outcome".

When #MeredithTucker called me in the summer of 2022 to say that a producer we had loved working with, Juliet Berman, had a new potential film for us, I had been in the middle of a necessary work hiatus. I was dealing with a family crisis and had just passed on a few projects. But it was Meredith and Juliet and a comedy so I said I’d read it. I opened Nicholas Colia’s script on my phone at 11pm at night after a long day in crisis land to see a few pages before going to sleep. From the first page, I was laughing so hard that tears were coming down my cheeks and the silent shaking moved the bed enough to wake my husband up. I finished the script that night, said an immediate yes to the meeting, and started a year of living in this delightful world and helping to populate it.

GRIFFIN IN SUMMER is going to Tribeca! Be on the lookout for this one, people.

We all know the millions of reasons that @jenlame1’s editing on Oppenheimer was superb and deserved an Oscar. But one thing I’ve learned being her friend, that I think is very under discussed, is the editor’s ability to help the actor craft the best performance possible. Performance is often credited, rightly so, to the actor, director, writer, and sometimes casting director, but I’ve heard Jen talk about the need to keep the tone consistent, the ability to cut out any actor ticks, the careful choosing of takes that don’t go over the top, the care with which she honors the emotional arc the actor has worked so hard to achieve. I’m extremely proud of and impressed by her.
