The design is composed of two main components:
1. The front volume, facing the street, houses the “Educational Center.” It includes a conference hall, a large foyer, and two meeting rooms on the upper floor.

The school was designed as a “zigzag” that folds around the existing structure “De Pepermolen.” The six boarding groups are located on the top three floors, with one group in each “fold” of the building.

The boarding rooms are given their own character through the alternation of perforated and non-perforated metal panels. This façade construction functions both as a privacy screen and as sun shading. The open and exposed ground floor connects with the natural context of its surroundings, strengthening the interaction between building, environment and users.

The project is conceived as an ensemble of three volumes. The “city volume” on the southern side of the building complex engages with the urban character of the Lakenmarkt and its surroundings. The existing building structure is reused, reducing the project’s environmental impact. The building supports the full care journey: from intake and observation to treatment and a safe return home, all of this while being in a small-scale, nature-integrated setting.
With a strong focus on human scale, tranquility, and respect for the surrounding greenery, the architecture blends into the existing landscape.

This new residence will offer a safe and home-like living environment for 66 people with intellectual disabilities or acquired brain injury, all while supporting care, inclusion and a meaningful daily life.
Instead of one large volume, this project consists of three small-scale buildings, creating a warm and human-scale environment between the trees of Unie-K.
Construction is now moving into its final phase.
