⬇ Find Your West

Some places change depending on the weather. The Grand Canyon changes depending on the hour.
In our latest issue, we head deep into one of the West’s most iconic landscapes and linger long enough to watch it completely transform—sun to snow, copper cliffs to cloud inversions, bright blue skies to storms rolling through the canyon walls. The longer you stay, the more it shifts. And somehow, the more impossible it becomes to fully take in.
A reminder that the West still knows how to surprise us. That wonder still exists. That perspective can change in an instant somewhere between a quiet trail, a passing storm, and the vastness of a landscape that makes everything else feel very small for a moment.
Dive into the magic now on newsstands, Apple+ and Sunset.com.

There’s something endlessly romantic about an old Palm Springs ranch house.
The low-slung lines. The desert light. The feeling that generations of dinner parties, pool days, and long weekends somehow linger in the walls. This 1930s ranch-style home in Palm Springs’ historic Smoke Tree Ranch community had all the right bones — it just needed a thoughtful return to its roots.
Designer Emily Hancock of @rollinsandrew.interiors reimagined the once-dated home into a warm, layered retreat that honors classic California ranch architecture while making room for modern living. Think expansive indoor-outdoor flow, mountain views, sun-washed textures, and spaces designed for gathering.
Sometimes the best renovations aren’t about reinventing a home, they’re about rediscovering what made it special in the first place. Head to Sunset.com for the full tour.

Memorial Day in the West looks a little different for everyone.
Maybe it’s a long table filled with friends and family in the backyard, a beach bonfire at sunset, a road trip with the windows down, or simply a quiet moment spent outside under a wide-open sky.
Today, we’re honoring and remembering the service members who made those moments of freedom possible — and celebrating the landscapes, communities, and simple gatherings that make this corner of the country feel so special.
Wherever the day takes you, we hope it includes good food, fresh air, meaningful connection, and a little time to pause in gratitude.

Some front yards are just… there. A patch of lawn you pass through on the way inside.
But the best ones slow you down. They soften the arrival home and make outdoor space feel truly lived in. For landscape designer Lupe Monroy of @gozo_spaces,transforming this awkward, disconnected front yard started with one question: How should this space feel?
The result is a layered redesign rooted in flow, texture, and warmth — with sculptural stone paths, grounded planting, shaded seating moments, and outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of the home.
Because great curb appeal isn’t about perfection. It’s about creating a space that welcomes you back every single day.

What if a newly built home didn’t feel new at all?
Designer Sam Donnelly of @mercantile_and_merchantalongside collaborator Ryan Perella of @perellaarchitecture, set out to create something increasingly rare in Los Angeles: a home with warmth, texture, personality, and the kind of timeless details that make a space feel like it’s been there forever. Think cedar shingles, stone, tongue-and-groove paneling, vaulted ceilings, and a layout designed for actual living—not just square footage.
The result is a house that feels deeply rooted in its neighborhood instead of disconnected from it—traditional without feeling precious, layered without feeling overly styled, and filled with the kind of charm that only gets better over time.

Santa Fe runs on its own logic. The best chocolate in the city comes from a 1,000-year-old recipe. The best bookstore is in a mall. The best boutique has been on the same quiet street since 1983. The spa looks like it was airlifted from rural Japan. The best cocktail bar is 18 miles outside of town at the end of a rail line almost nobody uses. And the place to sleep borders 1.7 million acres of national forest.
Here’s how to do your visit right.
Morning — @kakawa_chocolatehouse Skip the coffee. Order a flight of drinking chocolate elixirs — pre-Columbian Mesoamerican recipes, an 18th-century French court formula. Ask for the Marie Antoinette.
Afternoon — @sitesantafe A converted warehouse in the Railyard District that consistently shows some of the most ambitious contemporary art in the Southwest. High ceilings, serious work, never crowded. Plan ninety minutes. The building is easy to walk past; don’t.
Afternoon — @sote_1982 Fine jewelry handmade in Santa Fe, clothing from independent designers, objects with actual provenance. The founders traveled through twenty countries collecting this. Give yourself an hour.
Afternoon — @tenthousandwavesjapaneseresort Private hot tub suites in the Sangre de Cristo foothills. Izanami restaurant on site — one of the largest sake collections in the country. Book ahead.
Night — @legaltenderlamy Drive south. Follow the tracks. An 1881 rail saloon serving craft cocktails under a pressed tin ceiling, Friday through Sunday. Book on Tock.
Where to Stay — @bishopslodgeauberge 317 acres bordering national forest. The chapel on the grounds dates to 1864. Ten minutes from the Plaza.

What if the best interiors weren’t the main character, but the backdrop?
Inside this lovingly restored 1912 Palo Alto home, artist @sandyostrau and her husband filled every corner with personality, layering an eclectic art collection against warm, quietly thoughtful interiors by Chantal Lamberto.
The home’s original quirks—sloped ceilings, rustic rafters, uneven floor heights—weren’t designed away. Instead, they became part of the charm, grounding the space in history while allowing the art, vintage finds, and collected details to shine.
The result feels deeply personal: a home that doesn’t just display creativity, but fully lives in it.
