One show, 30 minutes+/- on stage.

Actual time spent rehearsing, preparing, getting ready, loading in, driving, arriving for sound check, playing, being there watching (and enjoying) the other acts do their thing on stage, chatting with some audience members, packing up and finally heading home, loading out of my car and arriving home: 12+/- hours. (That’s not counting recovery/unwinding time from being on stage and around a small crowd of people)

Does that sound like too many hours to you? Well, that’s pretty normal for a musician.
It’s one of the reasons I advocate so loudly to reach a point where musicians get a fair wage.So when you see anyone offering less than $150 for an hour of playing (at times not even to a solo act, but to a full band!), please think about all these hours we spend getting our music to the stage and to you, and speak up for us as well.

The show this picture is from is not an example of this… in fact, it’s probably one of the few that actually compensates the artists more than fairly and provides a great, friendly, pre-show experience that makes us feel appreciated 🙌🏽. We need more like this!

People always have asked what my musical influences are.

There are soooo many.

This past weekend I started listening to some of the music I grew up with and let me tell you, it explains why I am who I am musically and as a songwriter.

It also shows how history just keeps (unfortunately) repeating itself… and it also gives an insight to the fact that songwriters are the keepers of history, be it personal, communal, or global.

Listen to the song, read the translation, look at the parallels and let me know in the comments if you’d like me to share more of the music I grew up with and became the fabric of who I am.

It was a beautiful evening of storytelling and friends in this backyard house concert. The show helped to raise funds for a unique recording inside a reverberant underwater themed room inside the Sternberg Museum, in Hays, Kansas. The natural acoustics of the room create a hauntingly visceral experience they hope to capture on tape.
