Soul singer supreme, @jalen_ngonda and producer/veteran keyboardist, @victoraxelrod join forces to deliver the collaboration we all needed–the impossibly soulful, reggae banger “All About Me.” OUT NOW - Digital and 45 at the link in bio.

Having worked together on the sessions for Come Around and Love Me, Axelrod recalls being inspired by the similarities between Jalen’s voice and a young Bitty Mcclean. He had the beds to a track already recorded, but needed the right singer. With Jalen on board, the two wrote the lyrics and recorded the vocals in one night. Written from the perspective of an arrogant lover, the track’s party-forward swing and stellar vocal performance make for a pop-forward gem.

“Great Escape” b/w “Bezos vs. Musk”

Judah Eskender Tafari cultivated a loyal fanbase and respectable catalog during his recording career. The Studio One single “Rastafari Tell You” sits at the top of a small set of deep cuts he recorded for Coxson Doddʼs famed studio starting in 1978. The earnest lyrics and spiritual mission of these early recordings would define Judahʼs entire career, extending through the decades to “Great Escape,” a new Daptone 45 produced by Victor Axelrod. The song alludes to the Old Testament in a vision of mankind gone astray, trying to escape the confines of the Earth for salvation. Axelrod picked the title for the dub because at the time he was finishing the mixes, Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos were in a much-discussed space consistent with the sentiment in the song, or as Axelrod puts it simply, “they’re all terrible ideas presented as being progressive.”

Shortly after falling in love with the song via a 45 mix from Gabe Roth, Axelrod received a serendipitous message from the late great Minott saying he was in town and ready to work. Sugar’s effortlessly soulful vocals coupled with Axelrod and Co’s sweet and spacious groove, transform the Notation’s track into a slow, sticky revelation of love that’s actually stable. The perfect soundtrack for discerning soirees and those moments where you have one foot out the door but need a moment of reflection.

This footage is some of the only footage I have from my time in NYC as it was before the great digital take over of our brains. Extremely grateful to have the opportunity to work with Victor and I hope i get another opportunity at some point. #dub
