“On 'A Tribe Called Love,' shooting with the ARRI ALEXA 35 came down to practicality and aesthetics. I wanted a camera package that was condensed, nimble, and versatile. The in-camera textures were a bonus—a film-like quality I reach for on every project, budget permitting or not. I always try to shoot a lot of projects on film, and when the budget doesn't really call for it, the ALEXA 35 is exactly the tool for the job,” says cinematographer Liam Higgings on using ALEXA 35 with the Nostalgic texture on “A Tribe Called Love.” In this new feature film, two Somali youths in a Toronto neighbourhood choose to love each other despite the inevitable conflict they will face because they come from rival tribes.

"The most challenging part was filming the ending of the music video. We had originally planned to shoot it at sunset, something quiet, controlled, almost resolved. But when we arrived, it started pouring rain. We had to make a decision quickly, either hold onto the plan or let it go. We chose to lean into what was in front of us. We filmed GOVI riding through the downpour, leading him from the back of a moving van with the trunk open. It was uncomfortable, chaotic, and uncertain for all of us." - Director: @jordenandrewlee

We knew from the beginning that it had to be shot on 4-Perf 35mm. It just felt right for the story.

We shot on the ARRI Arriflex 235 using a mix of ARRI/Zeiss Master Primes, ranging from wider lenses like 14mm and 27mm to longer focal lengths like 65mm and 100mm. Those lenses gave us a kind of precision and intimacy that worked well for the quieter moments. We also used the Angenieux Optimo 24–290mm zoom, which allowed us to stay flexible, especially in more unpredictable situations.

"The most challenging part was filming the ending of the music video. We had originally planned to shoot it at sunset, something quiet, controlled, almost resolved. But when we arrived, it started pouring rain. We had to make a decision quickly, either hold onto the plan or let it go. We chose to lean into what was in front of us. “Director Mike Mildon and I really wanted to shoot this project on 35mm film because we wanted to make this spot feel more life-like and truthful - almost like we were in the room with these athletes experiencing the solitude of training. But, with a tight timeline, we had to create the same look in digital. The dynamic range and the textures option provided by the ALEXA 35 made this camera a no-brainer for the project. I normally only ever shoot with ARRI cameras when shooting digital, and the ALEXA 35 has become a go-to tool for me on projects with tight turnarounds when I can’t shoot film. Its compact and modular design allowed us the sort of freeness to explore different options from using the dolly with our swimmer, to tracking with our runner handheld.
